Each year, billions of pounds of garbage end up in the oceans. Sometimes people throw away water 【小题1】 (bottle) or other plastic. They do not recycle their garbage. People may not know that wind 【小题2】 rain can move garbage from land to sea. Plastic takes a very long time to break down. It can remain in the oceans 【小题3】 hundreds of years. Plastic pieces are very 【小题4】 (danger) to sea animals.

One group, Washed Ashore, came up with a new idea 【小题5】 (tell) people about the problems in the oceans. First, they take the garbage from 【小题6】 beach. Then, they clean and sort it. 【小题7】 (final), they work with the plastic pieces to make huge works of art. The artwork is mostly of sea creatures (生物).

Washed Ashore has 【小题8】 (create) more than seventy of these works of art. Some of them are now traveling in a show all over the world. Each piece shows the effects of trash.

In one show, people learn how plastic fools fish and other sea animals. They think the plastic 【小题9】 (be) food, eat it, and they get very sick or even die.

This would not happen 【小题10】 people used less plastic and did not litter. The plastic would not end up in the ocean.

A lot of people drink bottled water in the world. A water bottle offers great convenience. It can 【小题1】 (buy) almost anywhere, carried around for a while, and then thrown away.

The influence of bottled water on the environment, however, is very big. About 2.7 million tons of plastic is turned into bottles which are only used 【小题2】 (one) each year. This requires a lot of oil and water. It also produces greenhouse gases. Bottled water is often carried 【小题3】 long distances to reach people who buy it. This uses even more fossil fuels(燃料) and creates more pollution. Although the bottles can be recycled, only small parts of them are. The United States only 【小题4】 (recycle) about 23 percent. The rest are part of a growing waste problem.

Convenience isn’t the only reason for bottled water 【小题5】 (become) popular. Many people believe that it must be cleaner and healthier than tap water from public water systems. But this is not true. In developed countries such as the United States and some countries in Europe, laws about safe water are often 【小题6】 (strict) for tap water than for bottled water.

It may come as a surprise that nearly 40 percent of 【小题7】 water bottled in the United States starts from tap water. Before bottling, some companies filter(过滤) it, and they might add some things for taste. What’s more, bottled water can cost from 240 to 10,000 times more than tap water.

“Back to the tap” activities start around the world. In order to save money, use fewer resources, and create 【小题8】 (little) waste, they support using tap water and reusable bottles rather than bottled water. San Francisco and other cities across the United States no longer allow their government departments to buy bottled water. Cities 【小题9】 Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom are considering similar decisions. Many bottled water 【小题10】 (company) are trying to improve, too. They have reduced the use of plastic in their bottles.

Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago. But there is 【小题1】 problem—pollution. It comes in many 【小题2】 (way). We smell it, drink it and even hear it.

The 【小题3】 (many) people, the more pollution. Many years ago, there were not many people, so the pollution was not very serious. When people used up the land(陆地) they 【小题4】 (move) to a new place. But we can’t do that now.

What will the future be like? Some 【小题5】(science) say that the pollution will be more serious. The city will be more crowded 【小题6】 there will be more people and cars. At last, the earth will be a 【小题7】(danger) place for humans. They have to leave the earth and look 【小题8】 another planet to live on.

【小题9】(lucky), many countries are making rules to fight pollution now. They ask people to take the subway or bus to work. They stop people from burning coal(烧煤). They also ask people to plant more trees. Thanks to 【小题10】(they), I think our earth will be better.
