Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, about 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic waste go into waterways such as oceans, rivers, and lakes each day. Now plastic was found on the backs of hermit crabs (寄居蟹). According to a recent study, hermit crabs are using plastic garbage as shells (壳).

Zuzanna Jagiello is a biologist at the University of Warsaw, in Poland. She thinks that the hermit crabs don’t have homes, so they use rubbish. Human activity has had a great influence on the environment. One example of that influence is hermit crabs using plastic waste as shells.

But according to a recent study, at least 386 hermit crabs have been recorded wearing garbage. Of the world’s 16 kinds of hermit crabs that live on land, 10 have been seen wearing garbage. Nearly 9 out of every 10 of those crabs were wearing plastic waste, such as bottle caps. The others wore glass, such as broken light bulbs (灯泡).

Jagiello says that she and her team first learned about hermit crabs wearing garbage when they noticed photos of them online. They decided to learn more by doing research. For their study, the researchers searched the Internet for photos of hermit crabs wearing garbage. They found photos from all over the world. Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife and habitats (栖息地) in many ways. But so far, it isn’t clear that the crabs are in great danger.

There is lots of garbage (垃圾) in the Pacific Ocean around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), which is located halfway between Japan and California (加利福尼亚州). However, how can this be cleaned up in such a big ocean?

A man named Boyan Slat took a swimming trip to Greece (希腊) when he was 16. The young man was shocked to see more plastic waste than fish in the ocean and decided to do something about it. That’s how the Ocean Cleanup got its start in 2013.

Slat’s group cleans up the GPGP using a floating (浮动的) plastic tube (管). The tube will go around the garbage and catch it. The plastic tube is 600 meters long. A big screen hangs down from it, about three meters into the water. Wind and waves will push the garbage towards the tube (fish can swim under the screen). Ships will pick up the garbage and take it back to the land to sort (分类) and reuse it.

The GPGP has about 1. 8 trillion (万亿) pieces of garbage. Most of it is plastic, like bottles and bags. Plastic garbage is very bad for birds and fish. They may get trapped or eat the plastic waste and then become sick or even die. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter our body through the seafood.

The Ocean Cleanup says it will be able to clean up half of the garbage in the GPGP within five years. If this first project works well, the Ocean Cleanup hopes to put as many as 60 more plastic tubes in the ocean. About 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. The purpose of the organization is to clean out 90 percent of the ocean plastic by 2040.

Trash (垃圾) for Toilet Use

In recent years, tourism has developed rapidly in West China. This has led to a huge increase in trash. Most of it has been left behind by tourists. In 2021, photos of plastic waste along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (青藏公路) were shared online. This made local people worried about the local environment.

Local governments (当地政府) and nonprofits (非营利组织) have tried many different ways to deal with this problem. One project uses a new idea: trash for toilet use. The project sets up special restrooms in scenic areas. There’s one such restroom on Mount Zheduo (折多山).To use it, visitors must throw an empty plastic bottle into an intelligent box. The box will then give them a “green coin.” They can use the green coin to unlock the door of the restroom.

The project began last November. “Tens of thousands of visitors have taken part in it,” the nonprofit Green River said in a post on Weibo. “Millions of pieces of trash have been collected.” For some visitors, however, the project is confusing. One of them shared his experience on social media. “It’s a good idea,” he said. “But it’s impossible for visitors to always have an empty bottle on hand.” What do you think of this project?

Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish.
The lake water is polluted (污染的). It is in a color of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.
How does this happen? First we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog so the rain water was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals (化学品) in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects (昆虫). There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines or shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rain water picks up all the chemicals from homes and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas (油和汽)   from boats often get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people's lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.
