There is a saying that “earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” It seems sadly true. Thousands of people died under bricks (砖块) of the damaged (毁坏的) buildings during the recent earthquakes. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof (抗震) buildings? Engineers have some life-saving ideas.

“Lift” the house up

To prevent earthquake waves from going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building’s foundation above the ground. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are usually made up of steel and rubber. During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays steady (平稳的). This can reduce the strength of earthquake waves by 13 to 15 percent, according to the website Bethinking the Future.

Right materials

Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to bend (弯曲) without breaking. Some of these materials include steel, wood and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood. During earthquakes, wooden buildings bend to avoid building up stress. Steel is one of the main materials of modern tall buildings because it can increase their ductility (延展性).

Dome house

A Japanese company has made dome-shaped houses with styrofoam. Styrofoam is a very light material. The whole house weighs only 80 kilograms. So when earthquakes happen, the house will not hurt people.

Besides, there are many other good ideas on building earthquake-proof buildings. For example, a company in America is developing magnetic field (磁场) technology that can raise houses above ground when earthquakes happen. We hope these ideas can be put in action and more people’s lives can be saved.

【小题1】How does the writer lead into the passage in Paragraph 1?
A.By telling a joke.B.By using a saying.C.By asking a question.
【小题2】Why can the pads help buildings stay steady in an earthquake?
A.Because they can stop the ground movement.
B.Because they can lift up buildings far from the ground.
C.Because they can reduce the strength of earthquake waves.
【小题3】What do we know about Japan’s traditional houses?
A.Bamboo is the most common material used for the houses.
B.Most are hard to bend thanks to the use of steel.
C.Most are built with wood which is easy to bend without breaking.
【小题4】What is the advantage of using styrofoam in dome-shaped houses during earthquakes?
A.It reduces the weight of the houses.
B.It raises the houses above the ground.
C.It increases the strength of the houses.

Natural Disasters

Earthquakes are natural disasters. They are the shaking of the earth’s surface(表面). The earth makes these natural earthquakes in order to release pressure(释放压力).

More than a million earthquakes happen in the world each year. Earthquakes usually last less than a minute but you can feel them. The scary thing about earthquakes is that they begin with no warning. But scientists are still working on the problem.

There are about 20 plates(板块)along the surface of the earth that move slowly all the time next to each other. When the plates touch each other, huge rocks are created(创造)and explode(爆炸)with great power(力量), causing an earthquake. As the plates move, they put pressure on themselves and each other. When the pressure is large enough, the crust(地壳)is forced(被迫)to break.

Shaking and ground breaking are the main effects(影响)created by earthquakes. After an earthquake is over, buildings are usually damaged(破坏)and people get hurt even killed.

Some people think animals can predict(预言)an earthquake. The earliest reference(参考) about unusual animal behavior is from Greece in 373 BC. Rats and snakes reportedly left their homes and headed for safety several days before an earthquake. Scientists can easily explain the cause of unusual animal behavior seconds before humans feel an earthquake. Very few humans notice the smaller P wave that travels the fastest from the earthquake source(源)and arrives before the larger S wave. But many animals are able to feel the P wave seconds before the S wave arrives. As for sensing an earthquake days or weeks before it happens, that’s a different story. Scientists have tried many different ways of predicting earthquakes, but none have been successful. They need to do much research on this subject.

So what should you do when an earthquake begins? If you are inside a building, you should take cover under a table. If you are outside, you should stay out in an open place.

【小题1】An earthquake happens because ________.
A.the earth wants to release pressure
B.there are more creatures on the earth
C.there are about 30 plates along the surface of the earth
D.people damaged the surface of the earth
【小题2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The places of earthquakes.B.The reasons for earthquakes.
C.The ways of predicting earthquakes.D.The bad result of an earthquake.
【小题3】Some animals ________ so they leave their homes to safe places before an earthquake.
A.are very cleverB.can create an earthquake
C.like living in new places with their friendsD.can feel the P wave seconds before the S wave arrives
【小题4】The writer probably agrees(同意)that ________.
A.we should protect the animals before earthquakes
B.scientists can know earthquakes before they happen
C.people should learn to keep safe during earthquakes
D.earthquakes are the most dangerous natural disasters

Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆). They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don’t worry because most earthquakes are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it’s important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.

Do NOT go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线).

Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.

Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.

Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself on the fire.

If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it’s safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don’t drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.
