Look at the picture! A girl is standing on a bamboo on the river and dancing beautifully. It’s a ________ of art called bamboo drifting (独竹漂).

Yang Liu, 27, is a performer (表演者) of bamboo drifting. She started to learn it from her ________ when she was 7. As she had health problems in her childhood, her grandmother asked her to improve her health through this ________. Yang threw herself into practicing bamboo drifting all year round, even in the ________ winter and hot summer.

“It was common for me to fall into the water when I started practicing,” recalled Yang, adding that it took her three years to learn the basic skills of bamboo drifting.

In order to get more bamboo drifting skills, Yang had to practice a lot of ________ movements on a bamboo and ________ all the physical pain that came with it. Through years of hard training, Yang now ________ the bamboo pole (竿子) as her “best friend”.

Encouraged by her grandmother, Yang began to connect dance with bamboo drifting. My grandmother ________ an idea. She said that I had been practicing bamboo drifting since I was a child, so why not try to connect dance with the skill? “It might be something ________, but it’s worth a try,” the young woman explained.

Yang’s hard work ________ paid off when she was able to perfectly perform dancing with the traditional bamboo drifting skills. “I hope that more people can know about bamboo drifting and enjoy this art form,” said Yang.

Seventeen-year-old Nadia Clarke talks about her African experience:

Last summer I got the chance to spend a ________ helping out in a hospital in Africa. I had one year left at school, and I was interested in studying medicine at university. I thought it was the perfect chance to get some experience and to see ________ I   wanted to be a doctor.

It was a month that ________ my life. I was introduced to a world that is very different from ________ in so many ways. In the hospital, I was ________ at how poor so many of the families over there are and how difficult their lives can be. ________, I was also amazed at how positively people go about their everyday lives. The way they come together and help each other is a real inspiration, and this is ________ I think a lot of us here in the UK have forgotten. I think many of us don’t ________ how lucky we are.

My work in the hospital was ________, I not only spent a lot of time cleaning floors and changing bed sheets, but I also got to spend some time ________ the patients. And I got the chance to talk to some ________ and learnt a lot about medicine. I saw some truly awful things in the hospital, but ________ of them changed my mind about being a doctor. ________ they only made me more interested in doing medicine!

When I finish, I know ________ what I’m going to do: I want to work for an international organization like the Red Cross or Medecins sans Frontieres and spend my life helping people overseas who haven’t been as ________ in life as me. I can’t wait to get started.

When I was a young boy, I was too shy to _______ to anyone. My classmates often laughed at me. I was _______ but could do nothing. Later, something happened, and _______ changed my life.
