Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation (一代人)? Young, creative, connected, global, smart, maybe good-looking? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled (被宠坏) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything for them. So today’s young people seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to serve their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you are one of them born in the 2000s, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation.

Advice 1: I didn’t like recess at all during my school day from Grade l to 5. I wasn’t interested in ball games. So, like you, I spent many days at recess standing alone. But later, I learnt that reading a book is the best way to pass time. They can take you into a new world. If reading isn’t your thing, try making new friends. Whatever you want to do, just make full use of your time. Johnny Hayes, 15 |
Advice2: When I was 13, half of my friends play ball games at recess. I think it was too vigorous(剧烈的)for me right after lunch. So, like you, I stood around a lot. Then, one day, my teacher asked me, “What do you want to do?” I had no answer for her. But suddenly, it came to me: chess! I asked a few friends, and they were happy to join me. Now, I’m not advising you to play chess, only hoping that you think about what you really feel like doing. Philip Galanes, 40 |

In China, with one or both parents going out to make money, many children are left in their hometowns in the countryside. These children are called “leftover children”. A report showed that in 2021, China had a total of 9 million leftover children in the countryside. Usually, the children’s grandparents or their parent’s friends or relatives look after them. Sometimes these children are brought up by one of their parents at home. Most of their guardians(监护人) are not quite educated. To them, making sure that the children are healthy and fed well is the most important task. If the children are safe and fit, they are considered to have done a good job. Guardians seldom care about children’s study, their psychological needs, or mental demands(需要). Neither do they spend some time to teach kids how to develop good habits. In fact, these leftover children need more care.
The survey below is from some villages in Central China. Three hundred children were chosen to answer the questions. Among the six questions, communicating is the biggest problem. Only 46% of the children could communicate with their parents freely. And when they answered the question “Who to talk with”, 27% children chose “oneself” and 18% children chose “no one”.

I’m a teacher. I’m teaching in a poor area (贫困地区). Now, it’s cold in winter. But my students don’t have many clothes to keep warm. Can you give them some old sweaters? They walk to school every day. A pair of shoes is good for them.
The students can’t eat very well. For breakfast, they have some porridge (粥). And they only eat some rice and vegetables for lunch. They need eggs and milk most.
The boys in my school like playing sports after school. They play soccer very well. But these days they can’t play it because the only soccer ball is too old.
What about the books? We don’t have a library. But the students here want to read books very much. They all think reading is fun.
Can you help them? I’m sure my students will be happy if you can help them.
Thank you!
