a I studied in Los Angeles in July 2019. During that time, I often went to a nearby library when I had time. Because I am a book lover. In this library, I met a girl called Elena. She gave up several hours to help us there every Friday afternoon. Her job was to read books to us and listen to our reading. She spoke very slowly. So we all could understand her. We liked her very much. She was a very kind woman. She thinks teaching the students to read is very meaningful. And she can do what she loves to do.
b Have you ever helped your parents with household chores? If so, what do you think the worst chore is? You may have thought of several things already, but for English people, cleaning the oven is the most hated chore, a study released (发布) by Braun Care Style ironing (熨烫) systems on Sept 8 showed. Ironing is the second most disliked task, followed closely by changing the bed sheets (床单). However, their favorite chores—which they actually enjoy doing—are cooking, gardening and vacuuming (除尘).
c If people around you have had a fever recently, it may not be COVID-19. According to China Daily, many places in China have come into the peak (高峰) period for seasonal flu. Influenza A (甲流) is sweeping across the country. In the past three years, people did things to stop COVID-19, which also stopped the flu. As a result, people’s immunity (免疫) to the flu went down. At my local bakery(面包店) in Turkey, I’ll sometimes see the owner give someone a loaf of bread without any money. At other times, a customer will pay for two loaves of bread but only take one.
Askida ekmek, which means “bread on the hook(挂钩)”, has its beginning in Islam(伊斯兰教). It works like this: you go to a bakery and pay for two loaves of bread but only take one. On paying for the bread, you tell the person who takes the money that one of them is askida ekmek. The bread you give them is bagged and hung together with others, so when people come in during the day and ask, “Is there bread on the hook?” they can take a loaf for free.
The giving of bread (ekmek) is of special importance in Turkey because in Islamic belief bread means life and the protection of life is great.
“Bread is very important for eating and helps people know how bad hunger is,” Armanios said.
At the heart of askida ekmek — whether that’s leaving a loaf of bread in a bakery or helping some poor students outside their studies — is helping people, with no wish of return so that the people who ask for the bread on the hook can keep themselves from being looked down upon and go on with their lives.
