Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)

Last year, over 11,000 abandoned dogs were put down by government dogcatchers. Why? Because there was too little kennel space to keep them. Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) is a charity that rescues and finds homes for unwanted dogs. It’s a huge task and if this ____ had received more support last year, fewer dogs would have been put down.
To support the efforts of HKDR, the Social Service Club held a fun festival last weekend. ‘We hoped the festival would raise money and also raise people’s awareness of the point of abandoned pets,’ said Louise Wong, the club president.
The club organized stalls ____ second-hand clothes, delicious homemade cupcakes and even the fashions to keep pet dogs warm in the winter. Although there were fewer stalls than last year, ____ items were sold. Louise explained that this was because prices were not set too high this year.
The festival also ____ performances by the school choir and the hip hop group HK Boys. The crowd was extremely excited, and some members of the ____ said there was too much noise to hear the performers. Louise admitted that everyone would have been able to hear if there had been better sound equipment.
The most interesting part of the day was the dance challenge, with contestants(选手) showing off some amazing moves. This year there were more contestants than last year. According to Louise, that was because the prizes, including G. E.M. concert tickets, were better. ____, this year’s fun festival was a big success. It raised far more money than last year: a record HK$12,000. And the festival also raised joy among the special guests – some of our four legged friends from HKDR!【小题1】

There are many elderly people in Erdingford who live on their own and find it difficult to go out and to look after themselves. Yet most of them love their homes and want to go on living in them as long as possible. Helping Hand is a registered charity that helps such people to live independent lives in their own home environments. But our work______ volunteers, many of them young people, who visit our clients and help them with the activities of daily living, or just provide some friendly company for an hour or so.

Some of the elderly clients we help have failing eyesight and often they like to be read to. Others just enjoy an opportunity for some friendly conversation or playing a______ such as cards or chess.

What you do for your client is discussed and______ by you, your Volunteer Support Officer, and the person you are helping. You will not be asked to do anything you are not happy to do. A Helping Hand volunteer can be a trusted link with the ‘outside world’, helping to keep our senior citizens independent. But it’s not a one-sided benefit: volunteers learn so much from their clients’ experience of life as well as gaining new skills by taking on the______ of caring role. As Roy (18) said:

I thought voluntary work would be a matter of doing little jobs for an old person I didn’t know, and then feeling_____ myself because I’d done something good. But it wasn’t really like that. It was more like a friendship: I learnt so much from Margaret about her generation, how things were in the past, and about life itself. And she seemed to take me______ , and to listen to what I had to say.
