Two best friends were Willie and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Willie taught his dog many interesting tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. One day, Willie walked with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than one kilometer from his father’s store — Mr. Brown’s store.

Willie began to throw stones into the water, and to watch ripples (涟漪) as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, enjoying the warm sunshine,

There were some wooden pieces floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Just as he was about to throw, the wooden piece turned and he fell into the water. He was at his wit’s end, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear.

Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking (叫), looking first at Willie and then around.

Then he started, as fast as he could run, up the street towards Mr. Brown’s store. When he got there the door was shut, but he barked loudly, until someone came and opened it. He caught hold of Mr. Brown’s clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping up and down. Seeing that, Mr. Brown realized something must have been wrong. He put on his hat and went with the dog.

Soon, the father came to the river, and saw Willie struggling (挣扎) in the water. Luckily, his father came to his aid and saved him. When he got over his fear, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friends.

It’s more and more often for us to see wild animals enter cities. This gives people in cities more chances to learn about wildlife but also leads to conflicts (冲突) between people and wildlife.

In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Some people like them and give them food and water. Other people don’t like them. They want the government and the police to stop pigs entering the city.

Animals can be dangerous when they are big enough. In Cape Town in South Africa, baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees. They even go into houses and take food from cupboards and fridges! They are big and strong animals, so they can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, cars and buses kill baboons in accidents. People’s food is very bad for the baboons’ teeth because it has a lot of sugar.

People in cities need animals because nature is good for our busy brains. If we want to make our city a good place for wild animals to live in, we need to make safe ways for them to travel around it.
