Does your school have charity sales? Our school had one a few days ago. Students brought many things for the sale. There were novels, magazines, toys, cartoon posters and beautiful candles. Most things were almost brand-new. Many students and teachers bought things at the sale. Wu Zhongyue, a Grade 8 student, found that novels for kids were much cheaper. Four copies written by Zheng Yuanjie cost her 10 yuan. Pan Liqi spent 20 yuan on posters and hoped the money would go to poor kids. At last the sale raised about 6,000 yuan.
The purpose of the sale is to help the children in Africa. Every day hundreds of them die because they have diseases or don’t have enough food to eat. First, there is no work for the children’s parents, so they have no money to buy food or medicine. Second, the governments in many African countries are too poor to care for the poor. The land and the weather are bad for farming. There are many organizations trying to help these poor people. The organization we are trying to help, the Feed Africa Fund, spends millions of dollars every year on food for poor people in Africa. This money comes from people like you—kind, generous people who do not want to see children die from hunger.

Maria Keller, a 16-year-old girl from America, has been changing that fact for several years. When she was 8 years old, Maria already loved reading. She also noticed that some of her classmates didn’t read as much as she did. When she asked her mother why that could be, her mother said that they might not be able to afford (负担得起) books. Maria had never thought of this. She could not believe that some children might not have bedtime stories read to them. She decided to change this.
With her mother’s help, Maria created an organization named Read Indeed to collect and send books to children in need. At first, Maria set the goal (目标) to collect and give out 1 million books by the time she was 18. It was at her age of 13 that she reached her goal. Today, at age 16, she has collected over 2.8 million books and has shipped them to many states and countries around the world.
She says, “I cannot live without books. As I continue my goal, I have learned that the number of kids who have no books are in the hundreds of millions. So I just can’t give up, even after reaching my original goal of 1 million books.”
She has recently set a new goal: to give out books to kids in need in every state in the United States, and every country in the world.

Mrs. White was reading a newspaper story to her class. The story said: Were you ever in a hospital when you were small? How did you feel? The doctors in Children’s Hospital are asking for money for children’s toys. Some children in the hospital must stay in bed for many weeks. Toys are needed to keep these sick children happy and quiet. Money for them can be sent to the hospital.
After Mrs. White read the story, she said, “This story gave me an idea.”
“You want us to bring some money for the toys.” “We could bring some of our own toys for the children in the hospital.” said the boys and girls one after another.

“We could make some toys.” said one of them.
Mrs. White smiled. “Do you think you could make toys?” she asked.
“Yes, yes.” the whole class answered.
“Great! Let’s begin to make toys tomorrow.” said Mrs. White.
