The earth is now covered by space junk after nearly 70 years of space exploration. An accident in 2023 made the clean-up more difficult to start.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), scientists plan on testing their “junk truck”, ClearSpace-1, in 2025. It’s a spacecraft with four arms that can catch debris (碎片) and bring it back to the earth. One of its tasks is to bring back VESPA, a 113-kilogram, two-metre-wide rocket part.

But it was hit by another piece of space junk in August 2023, creating new pieces. The ESA is now changing its clean-up plan. “We must … reduce the creation of new space debris and begin to actively reduce the influence on other objects,” said the agency.

Most satellites today are sent into the earth’s low orbit (轨道), which reach up to around 2,000 kilometres above the earth. There, spacecraft are most likely to hit each other. There may be as many as 170,000,000 pieces of space junk in orbit, according to the ESA. Big or small, any of the pieces can cause harm to a spacecraft. For example, if an object as large as 10 centimetres hits a satellite, the satellite will break apart.

________ One popular plan is to send a spacecraft carrying harpoons (鱼叉) and magnets (磁铁). The craft would shoot the harpoon to stick into the debris before “throwing” it back to the earth. Magnets could move the debris, changing its direction. The debris would burn after entering the earth’s atmosphere (大气层) so there wouldn’t be much left when it reaches the earth. Scientists are also considering shooting lasers (激光) from the spacecraft to heat up the debris surface, creating a small push that would change the debris’ orbit. This change would allow the debris to be caught by the earth’s gravity.

Space junk can be very dangerous, and space agencies around the world are testing and planning the clean-up. But why haven’t they done anything yet? One reason is the high cost. But they will still keep on testing the cheap and fine clean-up.

We make all kinds of rubbish every day. Some artists have new ideas on how to recycle (回收) rubbish. Let’s have a look.

What’s this? This is a model of Bumblebee. An Indonesian man called Yusuf made it at home. He used recycled waste such as plastic bottles.
Look at this! Canadian artist Benjamin made it. When the tap is on, there is no water but it’s full of plastic waste. It wants to ask people to end plastic (塑料) pollution.
Is it a walking robot? No, this is a big statue (雕塑). A German artist, HA Schult, used wasted washing machines to make it.
This is a “panda” made of recycled shoes. All the things are collected from beaches in Kenya. This panda wants to tell people to take care of animals in danger.

【小题1】Who made the model of Bumblebee?
A.A German artist.B.An Indonesian man.C.A Canadian artist.D.Some Chinese.
【小题2】What can we know about Benjamin’s artwork?
A.There is a lot of water in the tap.
B.There is no plastic waste in the tap.
C.German artist Benjamin made it.
D.Benjamin hopes we can stop plastic pollution.
【小题3】What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A.A walking robot.B.A big statue.C.A German artist.D.A panda.
【小题4】Why did someone make the “panda” according to the last paragraph?
A.Because people often throw old shoes away.
B.Because there is much rubbish in Kenya.
C.Because people should look after animals in danger.
D.Because people should learn to recycle rubbish.
【小题5】What is the article mainly about?
A.Use rubbish to make artwork.B.Why we should protect the Earth.
C.Pandas are our cute friends.D.Say no to plastic pollution.

The number of people living in the rainforest is rising, but the rainforest itself is becoming smaller!

During the 20th century, huge areas of rainforests were cut down. More and more people in Brazil and Indonesia moved into rainforest areas to find land for living. Local farmers cut down trees to grow crops (庄稼). Large companies have also moved into the rainforests to develop their factories.

The problem is that the area of the rainforest is becoming smaller and smaller. Scientists say that destroying (破坏) the rainforest is the earth and should be stopped. But why? Rainforest plants help to clean the air. What’s more, different parts of rainforest plants can be used to produce useful medicines and may be the key to solving serious health problems.

So how can we solve the problem? Governments can make some rules to protect their forests. Companies can create jobs elsewhere, so that fewer people have to live and work in the rainforests. Farmers are encouraged to plant crops in certain areas, and this helps to stop the soil from being washed away and produces better crops.

More than half of the plants and animals that live in the rainforest can’t be found anywhere else in the world. It is important to make sure that these forests are used well and protected by people.

①What does it mean to be green? Green is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. Buying a green product is a small step everyone can take. Deciding whether a product is green, however, isn’t always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product even after it’s of no use. Here is what we may keep in mind.

②The materials of a product are usually our first focus (关注). What is it made of? Are there any harmful chemicals in it? Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.

③Packaging(包装) is important. How is a product packaged? Is it over packaged? We’d better choose glass metal and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unbagged products whenever possible.

④Location matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? Think about how much energy was used to get it to us. Try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmers, shop at markets and buy fruits in season. Buying from stores near our houses is also a good choice, because we can go there without driving a car.

⑤Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural” but the words may be too good to be true. So much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible.

⑥The greenest thing is certainly the one we don’t buy. Things like food and clothing are necessary for life. But many others are not. Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store and doing without. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces waste and keeps the planet healthy.

【小题1】The writer would suggest choosing a product that is ________.

C.locally producedD.made of unnatural materials
【小题2】The underlined words “be taken with a grain of of salt” in Paragraph 5 probably mean “________”.
A.be easily understoodB.not be completely believed
C.be widely spreadD.not be quickly forgotten
【小题3】We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.deciding whether a product is green is always uneasy
B.packaging is usually our first focus
C.it doesn’t matter where a product was produced
D.the greenest thing is that we shouldn’t buy unnecessary things
【小题4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Buying GreenB.Recycling Waste
C.Keeping HealthyD.Reducing Energy Use
