Scientists have always wanted to know more about the universe.

Years ago, they knew many things about the moon. They knew how big it was and how far away it was from the Earth. But they wanted to know more about it. They thought the best way was to send men to the moon.

The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the Earth. A plane can not fly to the moon, because the air reaches only 240 kilometers away from the Earth. But something can fly even when there is no air. That is the rocket.

How does a rocket fly? There is gas (气体) in the rocket. When the gas is made very hot inside the rocket, it will rush out of the end of the rocket, so it can make the rocket fly up into the sky.

Rockets can fly out into the space. Rockets with men in them have been to the moon. Several satellites without men in them have flown to another planet much farther away than the moon. One day rockets may be able to go to any place in space.

The solar system has eight planets. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The Planets are all round, like balls. The planets all go around the sun.
Mercury is the closest to the sun. It is very hot on Mercury. The planets that are far away from the sun are very cold. Venus is between Mercury and the Earth. It is sometimes called Earth’s “sister planet” because they have almost the same size and shape. The Earth is the planet where we live. From space, the Earth looks blue because it has so much water. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Saturn is known for having rings around it. Uranus was the first planet discovered with a telescope. We can see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn with our eyes, however, to see Uranus, we need a telescope. Neptune is the 8th planet in our solar system. The planet is farthest from the sun.
Probes (探测仪) go into space and take pictures of the planets. We learn a lot from these pictures. If you could send a probe to any planet, where would you send it?
【小题1】What goes around the sun?
A.Moon.B.Stars.C.Spaceships.D.Planets.
【小题2】Which planet is Earth’s “sister planet”?
A.Mercury.B.Venus.C.Jupiter.D.Saturn.
【小题3】Some planets are far away from the sun so they are very ______.
A.coldB.hotC.smallD.bright
【小题4】What does the underlined word “telescope” mean in Chinese?
A.潜水镜B.显微镜C.高台D.望远镜
【小题5】Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Earth is the second closest planet to the sun.
B.Jupiter is larger than any other planet in our solar system.
C.Uranus is famous for having rings around it.
D.We can’t see Mars with our eyes.

In the universe, as we know, there is the sun, the moon, the earth and many stars. Through our geography lessons, we know the earth goes around the sun, and the moon goes around the earth. We have day and night because the earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is day. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, it is night.

Just because the moon is closer to the earth than the sun, it looks much bigger than the sun. Big things look smaller when they are farther, and small things also look bigger when they are nearer.

The sun is bright enough to give out very strong light. The moon can’t give out any light at all, but it looks quite bright too. Why? In fact, the light from the moon comes from the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But actually the stars are much bigger and brighter than the moon. They look smaller than the moon also because they are farther away from the earth.

There are still many other planets in the solar system (太阳系). All of them move round the sun. But of all these planets, only on the earth there are living things and people can only live on the earth too. At 9:00 am on October 15th, 2003, Chinese pilot Yang Liwei was sent up to space. He stayed there for 21 hours. It was the first time for Chinese to get into space.

【小题1】When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, the other part of the earth is ______.
A.nightB.dayC.evening
【小题2】People and living things can only live on ______.
A.the earthB.the moonC.the sun
【小题3】When did the first pilot from China return to the earth?
A.On November 15th, 2003.B.On October 16th, 2003.C.On October 15th, 2003.
【小题4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The moon goes around the earth, and it can’t give out any light at all.
B.The moon goes around the sun, and its light is from the sun.
C.The sun goes around the earth, and it can give out very strong light.

Why is it called Mars(火星)? Well, Mars is the name of the Roman god of war(罗马战神). People see the planet(星球)as a symbol of war for thousands of years. It is also known as the Red Planet because of its color. It is red because it’s rich in iron(铁). Chinese people called it the “fire star” for the same reason.

Scientists was interested in the planet. They first saw Mars in the sky more than 4, 000 years ago. Then, people from all over the world studied the planet. About 200 years ago, scientists started to study pieces of Mars. They broke away and drifted(漂流)through space for millions of years before they got to Earth.

Scientists have learned some things about Mars. For example, Mars is home to a 21-kilometer-tall mountain—the tallest in our solar system(太阳系). However, Qomolangma, Earth’s highest mountain, is just 9 kilometers tall. Like Earth, Mars has moons. It has two moons named Phobos and Deimos. The Red Planet also has the largest dust storms(沙尘暴)in the solar system. And they can last for months.

Earth is 10 times heavier than Mars. So The Red Planet’s gravity(重力)is only 37 percent as strong as Earth’s, meaning you can jump nearly two times higher on Mars. For the same reason, you are two times heavier on Earth than on Mars.

【小题1】Why does Mars get the name “fire star”?
A.Because it is red.B.Because it is rich in iron.C.Because it is the symbol of war.

【小题5】What can we infer(推断)from the last paragraph?
A.Mars has stronger gravity than Earth.
B.People are heavier on Mars than on Earth.
C.People can jump higher on Mars than on Earth.
