First aid is the science of giving medical care to a person before a doctor can be found. Knowing how to treat someone in an emergency (紧急情况) can mean the difference between life and death.

Many emergency medical methods are simple and easy to carry out. For example, several years ago, a five-year-old boy in America was playing with a young friend. Suddenly the friend stopped breathing. A piece of candy was stuck in her throat. The boy remembered a television program where the same thing had happened. He also remembered what people on the television program did to help the person who had stopped breathing. The same method was quickly used on his friend. The cookie flew out of the girl’s throat. She was breathing again. The young boy had saved his friend’s life.

The simple method used by the five-year-old boy is called the Heimlich maneuver（操作法）. It was developed by an American doctor, Henry Heimlich.

The Heimlich maneuver can be done in several different ways. If a choking person is sitting or standing, you should stand directly behind him. Put your arms around his waist (腰).

Make one of your hands into the shape of a ball, and place it over the top part of the stomach, below the ribs (肋骨).

Next, put one hand over the other and push in and upward greatly. Repeat the method until the object is out.

What good language learners do

There's no such thing as being born"good at languages"．However，some people can learn languages well． It only has something to do with their attitude （态度） and the way they learn languages．

Good language learners aren't afraid to take risks．

A friend of mine can speak English, French and some other languages I asked her what was the most important thing in learning a language．She answered at once, "Courage．"

Good language learners face the fear of making mistakes, but they are not afraid．

Good language learners take responsibility （负责） for their own learning．They create chances to use the language．They know practice is very important. They do not expect to learn the language only in the classroom．They look for creative ways to try out what they have learned．

Good language learners are good detectives．

Good language learners are always looking for clues to help themselves understand how the language works． They make guesses and ask people to correct them if they are wrong．They compare what they say with what others say． They record what they have learned and think about it．

Good language learners try to think in the language．

Good language learners prefer to think in the language. Though thinking in the language may not be easy at first，it is worth cultivating（培养）．To help them think in the language，they can carry on with a dialogue when walking along，sitting on a bus，or taking a break from other studies．Use the language whenever and wherever they can．
