Labor (劳动) education has been made a part of compulsory (义务的) education. Students will have at least one course every week on basic household (家庭的) skills such as cleaning and cooking. Should cooking be taught at schools? The topic causes heated public discussions.

Li Mei, a student in Beijing:

We have little time to develop our interests because we have to spend most of the time studying. A household skill class can give us chances to experience life and help us discover different interests. I hope we could be given the choices to take whatever courses we like.

Mrs. Chen, a housewife in Hubei:

Schools should have cooking classes. Children will be taught about their food and how to cook properly. Many parents don’t have the professional knowledge. A household class would provide the knowledge and training that parents are unable to give their children.

Mr. Wang, a teacher in Shandong:

By learning basic skills like cooking and cleaning, children can learn how to take care of themselves. Parents won’t always help their children with every problem they’ll meet in their life. It is necessary for children to know how to master these important skills as early as possible.

Wu Lei, an engineer in Shanghai:

I learned some basic cooking skills from my mother. But most of them were learned after I graduated from university, from books and online short videos. I hope these cooking classes will really make students realize that labor is important and valuable.

Do you know how to cook, clean or grow plants? If not, you can now. Labor (劳动) education has become a required course in all primary and middle schools since September, 2022.

Students in school have at least one labor education class a week. They try and experience different kinds of labor and learn different life skills and even job skills. Of course, different grades have different skills to learn. For example, students in Grade 6 can learn to cook two or three common dishes, like fried eggs or egg soup with tomatoes.

Labor education can enrich (丰富) Chinese students’ life. Chinese school education didn’t pay enough attention to this in the past. According to a report in 2019, Chinese kids only did 12 minutes of housework each day.

Families are also called on to take part in students’ labor education. They can make housework lists to help students be more independent.

Besides housework skills, students can have a chance to try new technologies like 3D printing. They can also learn to make traditional handicrafts (手工艺品) .

Chinese TV drama Awakening Age (觉醒年代), which tells the story of how the Communist Party of China (CPC) (中国共产党) was founded in 1921, ended several months ago, but it remains a hot topic on social media, where the discussion shows that it has played a positive role in educating young people about China’s revolutionary (革命的) history.

The TV series celebrating this year’s 100th anniversary (周年) of the founding of the CPC has won high praise online. The stories of the young people in the drama—who devoted (贡献) everything, even their lives, to the revolution—have touched a large number of people. The storytelling in the show has also been praised for successfully showing the depth of the CPC’s history and spirit, as well as the warmth of China and every family in the country.

Many people who have seen the TV series thought the story was so moving that they began to find background information about it and said that this was their first time to learn the history about the founding of the Party and the country.

“I read many of Lu Xun’s novels such as A Madman’s Diary for the first time when I was in primary school, but I couldn’t understand why he wrote them or the angry feelings hiding in the characters. After watching the drama, I read them again and found that I could understand what they wanted to tell the readers,” said Li Lin, an 18-year-old student.

阅读短文,根据短文内容用完整的句子回答下列问题。

If you think of the jobs robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. But in fact, in some situations, robots have already done better than doctors in finding illness. So could there be a place for robots in education, too?

British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. He even believes that by the year of 2027, robots will do the main job of the classroom while teachers will be like helpers. They will collect information of each student and provide more personal help. Smart robots will read students’ faces, actions and maybe even thoughts.

It’s still not sure if robots will replace teachers in the near future. One thing is for certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren’t enough teachers. As a result, 9-16 percent of children under the age of 14 don’t go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere and won’t get tired.

Perhaps the question is not “Will robots replace teachers?” but “How can robots help teachers?” Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.
