Imagine you are a great basketball player. You are returning home after a big game. As you enter the airport, you are suddenly stopped by many strangers. Some of them are taking pictures of you. “We’re your fans!” one shouts. “We love you!” How do you feel now?
Chinese basketball player Yang Shuyu (杨舒予) recently found herself in this situation (处境). So did table tennis player Wang Chuqin (王楚钦) and some other athletes. None of them welcomed the sudden attention. “Don’t meet me at the airport. I don’t like that. Meet me at the stadium. Thank you,” Yang said.
Many of us have favorite athletes. We get excited when they have a great performance. But some people have gone too far. These “superfans” think about their heroes all the time: What are they doing now? Where are they going next? Why do they look tired today?
Are you one of these “superfans”? If so, you may ask yourself two questions. First, why do you love this person? Some so-called “fans” only care about the looks of their heroes. They know little about their careers (职业). In a recent diving (跳水) competition, Quan Hongchan (全红婵) won the silver (银牌). During the interview, one of her fans shouted angrily from the stands (看台), “The judges were unfair! They gave Quan a low score on purpose (故意地)!” In sports, nobody can win them all. But that person didn’t seem to know that.
The other question is: How do your heroes influence you? A middle school student once wrote to us about his hero, Kobe Bryant. The boy decided to work harder in school after learning how hard the basketball player had worked. If you love your heroes, do not wait for them at the airport. Instead, try to make improvements along with them.

All of us have friends, and we often classify(分类) them as ordinary(普通的) friends, good friends, best friends and bad friends. How do we make friends with others? What kind of people should we choose to be our true friends? Let’s have a look .
Have good qualities
We should choose someone with a good quality as our friend. As the saying goes, “One takes the behavior(行为) of one’s company(陪伴).” For example, if we stay close to those dishonest people, we will also become dishonest.
Often make progress(进步)
If people always would like to make progress, they won’t stop. So if we make friends with those people, we will also try to learn from them.
Be able to help you
We are not able to finish everything by ourselves. We may need someone to help us with our study or other things in our daily life.
For most of us, one or two true friends are enough. They will always stay with you whether(是否) you are happy or not.
Remember not to make friends with those people—when you are successful, they will run to you, but when you are in trouble, they will leave you.

Calligraphy (书法) is one of the most traditional forms of art in China. It’s part of our culture. Since Sept. 2019, more than 20 schools in Rongcheng District (区), Jieyang have given calligraphy classes to their students. The new course is now popular with the students. Here is what they said about it: I think the course teaches us to write standard Chinese characters (汉字) in a proper way, using the right gestures. I advise making calligraphy a necessary subject in the primary school so that we can start to learn it at a young age. —Li Yuhui Although we are in an information age when many things can be done on phones and computers, still we should go back to handwriting by using brushes and ink. The lesson not only provides me with a good chance to learn Chinese art, but also makes me pay more attention to my handwriting. Calligraphy is well worth learning. —Xiao Ronglan I am glad to find my handwriting improves after taking the lesson. Now I spend about half an hour practicing calligraphy every day and it has become one of my hobbies. One thing which surprises me is that I also become more patient. That’s out of my expectation. —Wu Duanhua Our school sets up the course mainly to carry forward the traditional art. I don’t consider it boring or useless. Instead, it’s interesting and meaningful. I really enjoy the beauty the Chinese characters bring us. —Mo Linwei |
