In China, lots of students often use much of their time to study their lessons and don’t help with housework at home. Some students don’t think they need to do housework. Some parents don’t let their children do it. As a result, students are all in need of basic skills.

Luckily, things are changing. In 2021, many schools began to teach students life skills. Guangming Middle School in Shenyang built some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but in fact, I learnt a lot about vegetables,” said Cheng Bing, a girl at the school.

In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: They learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favourite class,” said Jia Yan, a boy at the school.

As we know, learning life skills is as important as learning Chinese and maths, because it helps us prepare for our future life. Boys and girls, do you help your parents do housework at home? If not, maybe you should get started now.

According to a new curriculum standard (课程标准) for labor education in compulsory (强制的;义务的) education made by the government, students in primary and middle schools have at least one course every week on basic household skills such as cooking.

Cooking should be considered as art just like any other activity which requires skills and knowledge. It is often said that students are supposed to learn scientific facts as well as how to prepare meals. The following will explain why cooking should be taught in schools.

1.Cooking is an important skill in life. Schools are supposed to teach knowledge to the students so that they can lead successful independent lives when they are out of school. Also, they can step into the world knowing how to make a living.
2.Cooking helps discover future career. When schools offer cooking lessons, students will show an interest in it and might take cooking as a career. This will give them the chance to perfect their basic skills and be creative in the kitchen.
3.Cooking avoids wasting money. Students used to spend a lot of money on ready-made food, while in the real sense they can prepare a nice meal with less cost by buying the required ingredients.

Some students talk about their experience about the cooking classes.

Michael: By learning cooking skills like, I can learn how to take care of myself and live independently. For example, I can cook eggs while my parents are busy with their work. Some-times I can prepare meals for them.
Linda: I made fried chicken by myself yesterday. First I mixed together some onions, salt and pepper. Next, I filled the chicken with the mix. Then, I put the chicken in a hot oven and cooked for a few minutes. Finally, I put the chicken on a plate and cut it into thin pieces. How delicious it was!

Cooking skills are much more useful than a lot of what is taught in schools, but it does require some fully equipped (配备齐全的) kitchens. I hope these classes will be good for students and not be seen as window dressing.

“The national college entrance examination will be put off for a month to July 7 and 8 because of the novel coronavirus outbreak. But the governments in Hubei province and Beijing can come up with their own suggestions on gaokao dates. It will be published after discussing with the ministry," the Ministry of Education (教育部)said in a notice on March 31st. This is really big news. Different people have different opinions.

I am the director of the ministry's Department of College Students Affairs   (教育部高校学生司司长). I think putting off the national college entrance examination is mainly to make sure students’ safety and the fairness of the exam. While most senior high school students are taking online courses during the epidemic (疫情),some students in the countryside who don't have the Internet connection might feel unfair, so the postponement is to make sure they will have more

time to prepare for the exam at school. As we all know more than 10. 7 million students will take part in this year's exam, so the ministry must use the most careful plan with the least amount of risk to protect their safety as well as that of the teachers.

I'm a 17-year-old girl, a senior high school student from Hunan. I am very excited about the news. Although we can't study in our classroom, our teachers try their best to help us with not only our lessons but also the problems in psychological health through the Internet. However, sometimes it’s boring for me to face the screen so long and I can't focus on my lessons all the time. Now I have one more month to prepare for the exam at school. I am so lucky that I will study hard to make my dream come true. Fighting!

—By Zhang Xingxing

I am Darning's mother. I have different opinions about putting off the national college entrance examination. So I don't think it’s necessary to put it off.You know the national college entrance examination is one of the most important exams in our country. We resume (恢复)it in the winter of 1977. The exam was held every year in July from 1978 to 2002. But in 2001, the ministry decided to move it earlier by a month from 2003, because the weather is too hot and the natural disasters always happen in July.

In July, 2021, China introduced the “double reduction (双减)” policy. It hopes to reduce students’ schoolwork pressure by reducing homework and after-school classes. One year and a half has passed, how do students feel about this new policy?

“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks (练习册) anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook. ”

According to Shen, teachers now teach at a much slower pace (节奏). Students have enough time to process (处理) new knowledge now. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field during a biology class. (3) This is a much better way to learn things than just learning from the books.

For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development’ (领导力发展) where I can learn all kinds of skills except schoolwork,” said Zhang.

Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Besides my progress, more importantly, each exam shows my weak points as well,” Zhang said.

Shen also pointed out that when pressure is reduced, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. (4) But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students,” he said.
