①“Volunteering (做志愿工作) can make a real difference to the world. It makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
②National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (机会) to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also stops some from sharing their abilities. The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
③Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure (压力). Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
④Choose an organization (组织) with the same interests and common values.
⑤Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
⑥Work with a experienced volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
⑦Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
⑧Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
⑨Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “...little things can change a person’s life.”

Many years ago, when I was in high school and working at weekends, I lost my wallet. That day, I needed to put gas in my car. I paid for the gas and then put my wallet on the front bumper(保险杠) and drove off. I didn't even have time to miss it when my phone rang. A man asked me if I had lost my wallet. I checked my bag and to my surprise, I had. He asked me to tell him what was in it. I did so. He then told me where to go to pick up my wallet.
As I drove to his house, I noticed the man's car. It was really special. I was thinking that there was no way this man could have easily got out of his car and got my wallet off the street. He had to pull over, get in his wheelchair, lower the lift, and then pick it up.
I thanked him like 10 times for finding my wallet. I didn't want to insult(冒犯)him by offering money but I really felt like offering something. So I asked him if there was anything I could do to repay his kindness, and he said, "Just pass it on". I said I would be certain to do that.
Well, one does not find many wallets and so it was about 10 years later that I found one. It took me several days to find the man to whom the wallet belonged. He lived in another state, about 60 miles away from where I found the wallet.
The young man was actually surprised that his money was still in the wallet and he tried to
hand me $20. I told him, "Thanks, but just pass it on."

About 20 years ago, while on the way to visit a student’s house, Zhang Guimei, a teacher in Huaping county (县) , Lijiang, Yunnan province, noticed a girl sitting on the hillside. The girl, 13, told Zhang she was about to get married. It was decided by her parents.
“But I want to go to school,” the girl said. Zhang went to her house and tried to talk to her parents to let the girl return to school and promised to pay for her school study herself. However, they didn’t agree. Zhang felt sorry about not being able to help. “We always say, each child should stand on the same starting line, but these girls didn’t even have a chance to get on the track (跑道) ,” she said.
After that, Zhang started to work on building a free high school for girls.
After years trying to raise funds, in 2008, Huaping High School for Girls, a free public high school, was founded and Zhang is the principal. Over ten years, more than 1,800 students from the school have gone to college. It is a “miracle”(奇迹) in the remote area, as most students didn’t do well in their study before the school was founded.
Zhang, now 63, insists on a daily routine—gets up at around 5 am to turn on the lights of the teaching building, calls students to get up with a loudspeaker, accompanies students to classes and sleeps after senior students’ study ends at midnight.
Zhang Guimei says she wants children from the mountain to attend the best universities.
In early December 2020, she was named a national outstanding member of the Communist Party of China for her achievements in education in the countryside in China. She was also given the honor of the country’s “role model for teachers”, “advanced worker” and “outstanding woman”.
Zhang Guimei says that a girl can influence three generations (代). “An educated, responsible mother will not let her children drop out of school.” she says. Her goal is to stop poverty(贫穷) from passing down from generation to generation.
