Many teenagers like to play video games, but 16-year-old Jin Ce put his mind into a world of numbers — Sudoku in 2013.

On Oct 15, the Senior 1 student from Xuejun High School in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province won the top prize at the World Sudoku Championship（锦标赛）. It was held in Beijing. More than 270 players from 35 centuries took part in the game. Jin took the championship for Team China. This was the second time Jin had joined in a world championship. Last time, he placed 10th in Croatia in 2012.

Many kids grow up with a love for video games, and Jin was also the same at first. Years ago, when he was in primary school, he became angry with other online players in one game because of their different ideas. “Why not try Sudoku?” suggested his father, Jin Guoqing. At that time, Jin Guoqing showed his son a nine-by-nine grid（格子）in a magazine. He thought it fun to fill the boxes simply with numbers 1 to 9. Since then, he has loved Sudoku.

Math was Jin’s strongest subject and he was interested in numbers. So, the number-based Sudoku quickly became the quiet boy’s favorite hobby. For Jin, Sudoku is a sport for his brain. “I enjoy playing sport and I’m also happy when I do brain exercises,” he said.

When Jin was a high school student, he felt upset about his science. “I have no idea whether Sudoku improves my performance in science or whether my love for science helps me win the Sudoku puzzles. I guess, maybe, it’s a little of both,” he said.

I’m a 16-year-old boy. I love playing chess (国际象棋). My parents didn’t ask me to start. It was my idea. It was during the summer holidays when I was 12 and I had nothing to keep me busy. I was really bored, so I bought a chess set, and soon I fell in love with it.

It took me a long time to learn the rules. There were some instructions on the box, but I had to read books and watch some videos (视频) on the Internet, too. Going to a chess club was an easy way to get help, but I enjoyed learning by myself.

Soon after, I played my first game with one of my friends. I wanted to do well, but I lost! I didn’t feel bad or get angry with my friend. Instead, I got to know how difficult the game is and I decided to work hard to become a great chess player!

Now, four years later, that is still my dream. I’m in the school chess club and I practice three times a week. Also, I’m always reading books on chess at home, and playing against my computer!

Next week, there will be a big game and many young chess players will join in it. It’ll be my first big game and I’m really looking forward to showing everyone what I can do.

Some boys and girls don’t like math. They think it’s difficult. But in fact(实际上), it isn’t so difficult to learn math well. Here is what you can do.

Listen carefully in class. The math teacher knows so much. When you listen carefully, you can know much, too. So be a careful student in class and listen carefully.

Ask your classmates for help. Your math teacher isn’t always with you. When you find a math problem and you can’t work it out, please ask your classmates after class. A good classmate is a good friend. He or she must be happy to help you.

Practice(练习) it every day. Do you want to be good at math? It takes time. You can’t learn it well in a day. So practice it every day and then you’ll find it so easy. Math is a useful subject. Let’s do our best to learn it well.
