Keane Everton is only six years old. He is from England. He looks the same as any other boy of his age. However, he has done something unusual. He rides a bike to raise money for research on PNH (血红蛋白症). His grandfather died of this kind of disease two years ago.

The boy missed his grandfather and always wanted to do something for his grandfather’s birthday. Even his mother couldn’t stop him. At last, his parents thought out an idea. They decided to ride bikes to celebrate a special birthday for his grandfather.

Then they planned to call on people to support the boy to raise money for the research on PNH. Many people are pleased and moved by Keane’s story. Most people think it is a wonderful thing and the boy should be given great praise.

A person from the PNH research team at St. Jame’s University Hospital said, “We are also pleased to see he and his family give this donation to our research. Every little effort really makes a difference.”

During the summer vacation, Lin Ling, a 14-year-old girl, made a good friend. He is not a person, but a giant panda! His name is Jingke. Lin spent three weeks with him, learning how he ate, slept and played.

Lin worked as a volunteer at the Wolong China Giant Panda Garden in Sichuan that summer. Every year, volunteers go to the garden to take care of the pandas. People aged 14 and above can join in the volunteer program. Each volunteer should work for at least 60 hours.

Lin cleaned the panda’s home every morning while she was volunteering. “We have to collect the pandas’ feces (粪便), as it can tell us what the pandas have been eating and whether they are healthy or not,” she said. “The panda keepers analyze (分析) the feces every day.”

The experience also helped the volunteers understand pandas better. When Lin fed Jingke, she touched its fur. “It was not soft, but hard. It seemed that I was touching needles (针)!” Lin said.

Fu Rong, a 22-year-old friendly volunteer, is very interested in pandas. So she found lots of information on pandas and studied them carefully. She worked very hard and found pandas not only cute, but also dangerous. “Their teeth and claws (爪子) are so sharp. Pandas like to be alone. They may fight to protect their home,” said Liang.

The world has developed quickly these years, but there are still many people in need of help all over the world. In 1942, a group of people started an organization (组织) named Oxfam to help these people. In fact, everyone can do something to help if he or she likes. Here are some simple ways to help Oxfam.

Raise Money

You can raise some money for Oxfam. For example, you can help to have a fashion show or a sporting game at your school and sell tickets. You can make cakes or sweets and sell them to people. You can sell old books to raise money.

Buy an Oxfam Gift

When you buy an Oxfam gift, your friend will get a card and Oxfam will send a gift to a child who lives in a poor country. The gift can be something like a schoolbag, some clean water, a young tree or a coat. If some friends put their money together and buy a big gift, it may help to build a small library for a poor village.

Tell the People around You

Tell your ideas to your family and friends so that they can understand you better. And you can get their support and maybe they would like to join you. If you want to change the world, talking to people is the first step to make things happen. You can find people with the same ideas and work together with them to make the world a better place.
