Jane, a reporter, is collecting information for the local newspaper. She is interested in the following things introduced in a magazine.

Smart Schoolbag

Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush?

A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner (扫描装置) are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.

Weather Sweets

Can you eat weather?

A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.

The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.

Sunrise Bed

It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it?

To help you get up, a company has created a “tool”—a sunrise bed.

It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. It will be louder and louder until you turn it off. The company explains, “The gentle light tells your body that it is morning, so it stops producing a chemical that helps you sleep.”

It's a sad story: someone keeps failing to get into the university of Tokyo for for years. It's the story of Torobo, a robot from Japan.

Torobo has been trying to enter the University of Tokyo in Japan. The university, also called Todai, is one of Asia’s top universities.Since 2015, Torobo has taken the national college entrance exam with other Japanese students .However, the robot has failed to get the required score for Todai every year. This year was no exception.

Torobo is part of a project called"Can a Robot Get into the University of Tokyo?" Japan's National Institute of Informatics started the project in 2013.Torobo is a robot brain that has arms to finish the test.

Researchers of the project want to find out what intellectual abilities(智能)will be taken place by machines. Results show that Torobo has grown in ability year by year. This year it got a score higher than Japan's national average(平均数), which is enough to enter other good universities, but not Todai.

With its big database(数据库), Torobo is good at solving knowledge—based questions and mathematical calculations. That's why it got good scores in physics, history and math. But Torobo has a hard time thinking independently. As a result, it got weak scores in language and writing.

Luckily, after four years of hardship, researchers have decided to stop Torobo from taking the test. They will grow Torobo's ability in the fields it's doing well n, so that it can be used in those industries in the future.

It’s hard to know how much active you need to stay healthy, isn’t it? That’s why the workers of Google Fit have worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA) to bring you Heart Point.

Heart Point is an activity goal. It can help you improve your health, and it is good for your heart. When you are walking, running, riding or doing some other sports, Google Fit is able to record it. Then, it can give you a report about your health. Even when you are sleeping, it can keep a record and give you some advice. Doing some activities will make your Google Fit heart go faster and is good for your health. You’ll win one Heart Point for each minute of moderate activity. For example, it can be faster when you are walking your dog. And you’ll get double Heart Points for more intense activities like running, hiking and playing basketball. It’s not hard to get the right amount of physical activity. It takes just 30 minutes of walking, five days a week to complete the activity you need. This amount of exercise is enough to make you less likely to have heart disease.

“It’s great at recording steps. I walk about 10,000 steps every day. The app seems to record really exactly as I start and stop the workout. There are fewer records of workouts such as riding a bike. But all in all, it’s a great app and I like using it very much,” says Alan Brockett from the US.
