Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can make a person’s life better.

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect chance to encourage others to become a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they don’t have enough time to do volunteer work.

The following tips can help if you have some of those worries;

Start out slowly. Don’t add too much pressure (压力). Even a few hours a mouth can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Choose an organization (组织) with the same interest and common values.

Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.

Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience. Remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right one.

Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives.

Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an after-school program to help students from poor families.

On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruits. She was surprised. One of the organizers explains that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an after-meal might be the most food they would get all the day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced-price meals, and those students’ families have to pay for the part of their food.

Lee was shocked, she decided to offer help to those who are suffering from hunger, “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Lee. She and a group of friends are using their programme skill to create a new app called Food of Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kind-hearted strangers to donate money to lunch accounts for students in a nearby school.

The Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan is famous not only because lots of students there enter universities, but also because it is the first girls’ public high school that doesn’t charge students any money in our country — it’s free to everyone in it.

Nothing would have happened without Zhang Guimei, head teacher of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls. The 64-year-old woman has been fighting against the unfair things girls face in the mountain for a long time.

In 2001, Zhang noticed that many girls from poor families had little chance of getting education. Then the idea of starting a free school for girls came into her mind. To raise money, between 2002 and 2007, Zhang spent the summer and winter vacations on the streets asking people to give away money to her school. However, she only collected about 10, 000 yuan.

Later, a reporter reported her story. At last, she got one million yuan from the government, and the Huaping Senior School for Girls was opened in September, 2008.

There were many difficulties at first, but Zhang didn’t give up. “I want my students to go to good universities,” she said. So far, over 1, 600 girls have left school and received higher education at universities. These came at the cost of Zhang’s health.
