As the weather becomes warmer, Wang Xiguang, 50, a store owner from Xinyang in Henan province, becomes more watchful as he walks along the Yellow River in front of his small shop. Growing up along the Yellow River, Wang almostdrownedin it when he was twelve, but a villager saved him. Soon after that, he started learning how to swim.

Playing along the river is dangerous but it happens all the time, resulting in drowning. Wang says schoolchildren are the main victims(受害者). Now Wang is famous for saving many people, about one in a year, from drowning in the river over the past 32 years.

He said he had come to know the river well over the years and that it could become even more dangerous in summer. “My main wish is for people not to play by the river, especially along the dangerous sections (区域) where water runs fast.” he said.

In August, 2011, two pupils fell into the river during the summer. Hearing their cries for help, Wang ran out of his shop and jumped into the water. After saving one child, Wang found the other was moving away in the fast-running water. But he managed to save both pupils even though the water was becoming much deeper and faster. With the children in their arms, their parents thanked Wang continuously. He just said, “It was just something I could do.”

My dad wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children hospital. My dad loved kids.【小题2】He would talk to them and play with them and do arts and crafts with them.

【小题3】The disease made her unable to let the neck down. It was very sad for a girl around eight or nine years old. She couldn't do anything, and she was unhappy. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper.

He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint.【小题4】He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth.【小题5】Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her.

There are many charities (慈善) in the UK. People in London give £2 billion a year to charity. Most people in the UK give money once a month. People usually give money to children and young people, to make new medicines, and to schools, animals and hospitals. Most people still give money in cash (现金).

Charity shops pay managers to work in the shops, but other people, called volunteers, work there and are not paid. People can give their old clothes, toys, books and other things that they don’t use any more to charity shops. The volunteers then wash the things to make sure they are clean before selling them. The money that they get from selling things always goes to a charity. Many people believe that you can find some special things cheaply in charity shops; you just have to know where to look!

Another way to give money to charity is by running or riding a bike in a charity race. You can ask your friends and family to give money to help you and the charity. Sometimes they give you money for every kilometer that you finish.
