People call the Chinese diving (跳水) team a “dream team”. It has been a world-class team since the early 1990s. Its future still seems to be bright these days with Quan Hongchan, a new diving star.
On August 5, 2021, Quan scored perfect 10s in three of her five dives and won the gold medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The 14-year-old girl’s composure made reporters remember her easily. “I was a little nervous, but not very, just a little bit, ” Quan said.
Quan said, “My parents told me not to be nervous, and that it doesn’t matter whether (是否) I get a medal or not and to just be myself.” “Those words really helped me,” Quan added. She planned to eat latiao, a popular Chinese street snack, to celebrate that night.
Quan was born in a rural family in Zhanjiang, Guangdong. She remembered how she felt when she started to learn diving at the age of 7. “It was so much fun and I wanted to win prizes as early as possible to help my seriously sick mother, ” she said.
However, it takes more than just interest for a beginner to turn into a professional (专业运动员) . “If I don’t train for a day or two, I feel scared when I get back on the 10-metre platform. A diver needs to practise every day and try his or her best every day,” she added.
