The new term started. Different from most students, Xiaozhou took his first class in bed. He is disabled (有残疾的) and can’t move.
Xiaozhou lives in Dianping Village, Longxi County, Gansu Province. For disabled children like Xiaozhou, taking classes was just a dream in the past. Luckily, in 2015 the local government organised (组织) the first group of teachers to give door-to-door teaching services to disabled children. More than 300 teachers in Longxi County have given free visiting services to over 170 children with special needs.
Yang Huijun is Xiaozhou’s teacher. He said, “When I went to Xiaozhou’s home for the first time about six years ago and saw him lying helplessly (无助地) in bed, I felt terrible. Because of fear (恐惧), Xiaozhou didn’t accept me at first, but I didn’t give up.” He visited Xiaozhou five to six times a month. With his help, Xiaozhou learned the numbers from 1 to 100 in May 2016. In April 2017, Xiaozhou wrote his name for the first time. In June 2018, Xiaozhou could draw simple (简单的) pictures. In August 2019, Xiaozhou learned 26 English letters. In March 2020, Xiaozhou could tell a story.
To thank Yang, Xiaozhou spent a month making a card as a Teachers’ Day gift for Yang. Yang liked the gift a lot. He said, “Now I teach Xiaozhou when he wants to learn. And I’m trying my best to make him learn happily.”
