The music band Coldplay（酷玩乐队）is taking actions to protect the environment. This includes using their fans’ energy to help provide electricity for their performances. In this way, they use electricity without adding carbon gases（碳气体）to the air. The band hopes to cut 50 percent of CO₂ given out by its business activities.

The Coldplay stars have added special dance floors and energy-storing（可储存能量的）bicycles to their world tour performance. The purpose is to get fans to help produce electricity by dancing and riding. Each dance floor can support many people. It creates electricity when people move on it. Each of the bikes can create 200 watts（瓦特）of electricity. In order to encourage fans to dance or ride more during the performance, they even have competitions to find out which group of fans can create the most electricity.

“Being green is a good business model. That’s what we’d like to show,” said Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. “The changes will bring a sense of belonging to the fans. Everything in our show is planned to bring everyone into the same group, singing together. It makes us feel part of a community.”

Coldplay has taken other steps to protect the environment. One of its tour stages uses recycled steel（钢）. The band also hopes to set up the world’s first tour battery（电池）system, made from 40 recycled electric car batteries. The hope is to power the whole show with batteries. “It’s very expensive to try these things for the first time,” said Martin, “but we are very happy that we are changing.”

Coldplay is just one music group working to help the environment. Some other famous bands are also taking such steps.

When plastic straws (吸管) has become a problem for environmental protection, Starbucks came up with a plan: Stop using them. The company redesigned (重新设计) its cold cup lids (盖子) so they won’t require a straw at all. Starbucks Korea was the company’s first market to reduce plastic straws through strawless lids and paper straw in 2018. In 2019, Starbucks not only introduced paper straws across Europe, but also introduced strawless lids in certain markets across the US, Canada and China.

By the end of September 2020, the recyclable strawless lids had successfully taken the place of plastic straws at Starbucks around the world. This kind of strawless lid will now be the standard (标准) for all iced coffee, tea, espresso, and Starbucks Refreshers drinks. It has about nine percent less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced drinks. Unlike plastic straws that cannot be recycled because of its size, the strawless lids are made from polypropylene (聚丙烯), which can be recycled. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is a small way that we can give more than we take from the planet. This is an important moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and do something meaningful for the environment,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations (创新), whose team at Starbucks helped design the lid.

“Last year alone, international volunteers removed nearly one million straws from beaches and waterways around the world,” said Doug Cress, a leader from the non-governmental organization Ocean Conservancy (保护). “Starbucks’ strawless lid is a good example of how innovation will help us move closer to a healthy ocean free of litter. We hope that other companies can follow.”
