American teenagers hear it all the time from their parents, “Are you listening to me? Turn down that music or you’ll hurt your ears.” A new study has found the parents may be right.

The study has found that many young people in the United States do not hear as well as they used to. One out of five American teenagers have some hearing loss. That is a 30% increase in the past fifteen years. One out of twenty teens have a large hearing loss. That is a fifty percent increase.

The study has also found that boys are more likely to have hearing problems than girls. The age of the teens had no influence on their chances of a hearing loss. The researchers say they are not sure why some teenagers are losing their hearing. Not enough studies have been done and more are needed. Some say the reasons may be found in their diet or in their DNA. Others believe that listening to loud music on MP3 players with earphones is the main reason.

Researchers think that some teenagers do not realize that they are listening to music at very loud levels. Researchers suggest parents stand next to their children while they are wearing earphones. If the parents can hear the music, the sound is too loud. Teenagers should set the volume (音量) control on their music players to somewhere between one half and two thirds the highest level, never louder.

Even a small hearing loss can influence a child’s social development. Communication skills and grades in school can also be influenced. Doctor Eavey says, “What we are seeing is a big jump in the chances of hearing loss in a very short time.”

Many children use the Internet to get useful knowledge and information, and to relax in their free time. But some of them are not using it in a good way. Here are some rules to make sure you are safe and have fun on the Internet.

Make rules for Internet use with your parents. For example, when and how long you can go online, and what activities you can do online.

Don’t give your password (密码) to anyone else, and never give out the following information—your real name, home address, age, school, phone number or other personal information.

Check with your parents before giving out a credit card (信用卡) number.

Never send a photo of yourself to someone in e-mail unless your parents say it’s OK.

Check with your parents before going into a chat room. Different chat rooms have different rules and attract different kinds of people. You and your parents will want to make sure it’s a right place for you.

Never agree to meet someone you met on the Internet without your parents’ permission (允许). Never meet anyone you met online alone.

Always remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Treat everyone online as a stranger.

If something you see or read online makes you uncomfortable, leave the site. Tell a parent or teacher right away.

Treat other people as you’d like to be treated. Never use bad language.

Remember—not everything you read on the Internet is true.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries and hamburgers. But do you know about “junk sleep”? Did you hear of it before?

These days, a British survey found that electronic(电子的) products(产品) in children’s bedroom are affecting their sleep. They couldn’t have enough hours to sleep because they stayed up late doing things with the electronic products.

The survey was among 1000 British kids from 12 to 16. It found that 30 percent(百分数) of them got just 4 to 7 hours sleep every day. But doctors said they need 8 to 9 hours. Almost a quarter of the kids said they fall asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products. We call it junk sleep. “It means you don’t get enough sleep and quality of sleep is bad, too. If you don’t get a good rest, you don’t do well at school the next day.”said Dr. Chris, a British. In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called "satellite kids", who live in one place but whose parents live in another place. 【小题1】

Asians are immigrating (移民) to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. 【小题2】 However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.
