Do you like to start your day with a cup of coffee? It cheers people up and helps in burning fat. However, the hobby also brings problems. One study shows that about 50 billion single-use coffee cups are thrown away in the US every year, while another believes the number is closer to 130 million. Whatever the actual number is, it is clear that our use of coffee cups is bad for the environment.

Fortunately, some companies are trying their best to solve the problem. GaeaStar is one of them. It is trying to create single-use clay coffee cups to take the place of plastic ones.

The cups are suitable for both cold and hot drinks. They are made of clay, water and salt, so they will produce no waste. You even don’t need to throw the cups into a rubbish bin. You can simply throw them onto the ground and smash (粉碎) them. After all, they come from earth and return to earth in the same form. Recycling is no longer required.

In fact, the idea of using clay as a solution (解决方法) to the problem isn’t new. But GaeaStar connects it with new technology. Using 3D printers, it can make the cup in 10 seconds. Its CEO says that printing a clay cup uses 60% less energy than creating a plastic or paper cup. This is an example of how new technology brings old ideas back to life.

Imagine the situation. You are driving alone in a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You forget to take a mobile phone with you. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device which uses satellites (卫星) to find the user’s position (位置). A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the earth. The receiver connects at least four of the satellites and calculates (计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate (精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

Chang’e 5 Back Home

In an ancient Chinese story, a lady named Chang’e flew to the moon alone. She never came back home.

However, another Chinese “Chang’e” just came back. After weeks of space travel, the Chang’e 5 lunar probe (月球探测器) came home on December 17, 2020. It landed in Siziwang banner in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Chang’e 5 brought back China’s first samples (样本) of rock and soil from the moon. They are the first lunar samples in over 40 years since the Soviet Luna 24 probe in 1976, China Daily reported. China has become the third country in the world to successfully bring back rocks from the moon.

The return of Chang’e 5 was the last step in China’s three-step lunar exploration program (探月工程). It began in 2004, including orbiting (环绕飞行), landing, and bringing back samples, Xinhua reported.

President Xi Jinping praised this success. “There is no end for space exploration,” Xi said.

According to it, human beings have a better understanding of virus and kinds of researches are born. With plenty of scientists’ hard work, creating a new way of resisting(抵抗) virus can be achieved. The new way is called nano-antibody(纳米抗体) which was found firstly in the serum(血清) of alpacas(羊驼). Because of its high cost, it isn’t popularized. However, cheap production mode was created after ten years’ research. It will be popularized in the future.

Second, China creates a quanturm computer(量子计算机) which was put forward in the 1980s. It can win any other computer in the world because of its super computing power and splitting computation speed. A great number of funds(资金) are put in by tens of large-size computer companies such as Google and Microsoft.
