In order to make students become more interested in learning English, 21 elementary schools in South Korea have started to use robot teachers.

The robot teacher is called Engkey. She was developed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. She is about one meter tall and is white, egg-shaped. She takes a display panel (显示板) as her face. She can move around the classroom while she speaks to students. She can also read books to students and dance to music by moving her head and arms.

Now, 21 robot teachers have been used to teach English. They are controlled by English teachers in the Philippines. There is a camera in each of the robot teachers. With the help of the cameras, English teachers in the Philippines can see and hear the students. At the same time, the facial expressions of these English teachers are very interesting.

Imagine there is a thing that could monitor (监测) your physical condition in real time. It is very useful, isn’t it? Some scientists may have taken some steps down that road. They’ve invented a wearable ultrasound patch (超声贴片)—something like a Band-Aid (创可贴). This patch offers an easy way to see deep inside the body.

This little “Band-Aid” thing has a lot of medical uses. People can stick the little thing over their skin (皮肤). It can record their physical condition and help doctors diagnose (诊断) signs of organ damage (器官损伤) or cancer. Most machines in hospitals that have these functions (功能) aren’t wearable. But this patch is wearable, so it’s very convenient. And it can work just as well as the machines in hospitals. What’s more, the patch can work for up to 48 hours—even while people are moving around a lot, like playing a sport.

“This is just the beginning,” says Zhao Xuanhe. He’s part of the team that created the patch. Next, Zhao’s team will make the patch wireless (无线的) so that people can check the results on their phones.

In many poor countries, medical machines are usually not enough. The new patch can be a big help in these parts of the world. Right now, it takes about $100 to make one. But its designers hope to bring that cost down.

Cars are becoming more advanced. In the past ten years, we have seen better electric car technology and driverless cars. Have you ever imagined driving your car only with your mind? It might seem to appear in science-fiction movies. However, with its concept (概念) car, Mercedes-Benz is making mind-controlled cars a reality.

The car producer Mercedes-Benz brought out the car at a show in Munich. It is called Vision AVTR. The four letters at the end of its name are easy to make people think of the movie Avatar. In fact, the car takes inspiration (灵感) exactly from it. Drivers can just control the car using their brains through the brain-computer interface (脑机接口), or BCI.

To drive the car, drivers or users must wear the BCI device around their head. First, the BCI needs a minute to “read” the driver’s brain. Then, the device can pick up signals from the user’s brain that work to control the car. This means that users can directly control the car using their thoughts.

A Mercedes spokeswoman spoke about how exciting she thought the car was. She said, “Mercedes-Benz is setting another milestone in the merging (融合) of man and machine. ”
