William Sydney Porter, known as O. Henry, is one of the most famous writers in America. During his early years, he did many different jobs besides writing. In 1898, Porter was put into prison (监狱). There he started to write with his pen name O. Henry and published plenty of short stories. After getting out of prison, he continued writing and wrote over 300 short stories, such as The Gift of the Magi and The Last Leaf.

There are three main features (特点) of his writing style. The first one is that O. Henry uses colorful and rich language in his novels. It makes his writing humorous and interesting. Second, the endings of his stories are mostly surprising. They are quite unexpected for the readers. Another important feature is tearful smile”.   Some of the stories are sad, but they also contain (包含) hope and warmth. These things make the readers smile with tears.

Bentley believed there were treasures in snow. “I can’t miss a snowstorm,” he said. “I never know when I will find a treasure.”
