Jenny was new in this city. She didn’t have any friends. And her classmates didn’t seem friendly to her. Sometimes she complained to her mom, and her mom always said that Jenny could get used to that and that everything would be OK.
A card arrived on Monday. Come to Melissa’s 10th birthday party! Jenny was excited to receive the card. She didn’t know Melissa very well, but she was glad to think that Melissa wanted to be her friend. Jenny put the card into her schoolbag. After dinner, she showed it to her mother. “It’s a swimming party, Jenny” her mother said. Hearing that, she grabbed (抢) it and read each word aloud. She stopped when she read where it would be: the Elm Street Pool.
Jenny didn’t even have a bathing suit. She liked skating. She played baseball. She was very good at playing chess. But in her mind, swimming was for ducks, and she wanted no part of it.
“This might be a good time to learn to swim,” her mother said. “I can take you to the pool every day after school. Really, you might even like it.”
Even the idea of swimming scared Jenny. And right then, in her own swimming pool, she felt like she was drowning (溺水). However, when she thought that she could make a lot of friends, she decided to have a try.

For more than 30 years, the 50-year-old Zhu Yanjun had been a common migrant worker(外来务工) in different cities like many other people from the country, but what made him ________ was his strong passion(热情) for reading poetry and books.
In early February, 2023, Zhu became well-known when he became the runner-up in the annual Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV.
Zhu’s passion for reading came from his Chinese language teacher in middle school who has published many articles in magazines.
“I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates,” he said. Born in a village in Jingning country, Gansu province, Zhu had never left his hometown in his youth. After graduating from middle school, he became a migrant worker.

“There is an old Chinese saying: Reading 10,000 books is not as good as traveling 10,000 miles,” said Zhu. “However, for me, although I have been to many different cities, it is not for travel but to make a living. So I improve myself by reading books and poems.”
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains about hard work. “Whenever I face any difficult, I think of Chairman Mao’s quotation: ‘Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it’,” he told China Daily.
Because of his good performance at the poetry competition, the government in Jingning county decided to hire him to work at the local cultural center. He started to work there on March 10.

Vance loved this idea. “This would be really cool to have at my school,” she said. To make it happen, Vance collected(收集)725 kilograms of bottle caps. Her mother helped find a company to turn the caps into benches. Vance said these benches were much cheaper than park benches and were good for the environment.
Vance did the same thing for other schools, too. She also made a Facebook page. People can make bottle cap donations(捐赠). She was surprised when she got bottle caps from Germany, Australia and Israel.
