EMERGENCY? WHAT EMERGENCY?

An emergency service (紧急服务) should be like that: a service that you phone in an emergency. You might need to call the police if you’re in a car accident. But some people phone the emergency services for some unimportant reasons (原因). _________

Here are some examples we heard about from emergency centres all over the world.

①I ordered food from a Chinese takeaway and it didn’t come. I’m so hungry! Can you tell them to hurry up, please?
②My children are making such a loud noise and I can’t think about things. _________
③There’s a black cat in my garden. Black cats are such unlucky animals. Can someone please come and take it away?

These calls are funny to read about, but they can have very serious consequences (后果). “Every call takes about a minute,” said one man who works in emergency services. “Maybe that doesn’t sound a very long time, but in that one minute, other people are calling who really have an emergency. And for them, a minute might be really important.”

So let’s get really serious: _________ And of course, remember that you should never phone them with information that’s untrue!

A. And it’s hard to believe these calls are real!
B. THINK before you call the emergency services.
C. Can you give me his telephone number?
D. Can you come and take them away, please?

Many people like to go diving(潜水)when they are on holiday. Jenney, a 14-year-old girl, is getting ready to have a special dive with sharks in the sea of Florida. It’s really expensive for her to do it. Sounds crazy?

Shark diving is a big business in some places and that’s raising a question about how close people should get to them. Some brave divers think it is no problem for them to get close to sharks. Divers   in Florida, for example, often have fun with lemon sharks, which have attacked people a few times before. On the other side, many people are against shark diving. They think no one should go diving with sharks. And it is foolish to feed sharks while diving and bring them close to busy beaches.

Bob Dimond has been a diver for 30 years. He’s worried that sharks may lose their fear of humans. “The reason why people feed sharks is to attract them, but people don’t want to be sharks’ food. However, when sharks learn to connect humans with food, they approach to see if they can find something to eat, Bob says.“ That’s reason enough to stay away from sharks.”

Bob has created the Marine(海洋的)Safety Group. He and his friends believe if people feed a wild animal, they will increase the chance to be attacked. Therefore, their goal is to stop all shark feeding. In fact, shark feeding has never been directly associated with an attack on a human. When a shark strikes, it is usually“hit and run”. It bites and then quickly releases the person and disappears.

Obviously, sharks make shark diving so attractive. For divers such as Jenney, diving with sharks is a once-in-a-life experience. Jenney says,“I actually had a chance to lie down on the bottom of the ocean and the sharks were right in front of me. And I could see their mouths and their eyes and feed them. I used to know only a little about sharks, but now I want more teenagers to join me.”

We all know that running is good for our healthy. Have you ever thought that running is also good for the planet? Sometimes a creative mind can bring us a win-win situation.

Plogging is becoming increasingly popular after it started as an organizational activity in Sweden (瑞典). What is plogging? It is a term referring to the act of picking up litter while jogging. The term “plogging” is created by combining the English word “jogging” and “plocka upp”, a Swedish term that means “picking up”.

A Swedish man called Eric Ahlstrom started the movement. After moving from a Swedish ski resort to Stockholm, Eric noticed a lot of litter when he rode to work each day. So, he decided to do something about it. In 2016, Eric began organizing groups to pick up rubbish while jogging, and thus “plogging” was born. It spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution.

Plogging is considered a perfect activity, as it is positive both for the body, and for the environment. There’s no doubt that moving your body will do great things for your health, and plogging will also add some extra moves like squatting (蹲下) or bending (弯曲) your body. According to a research, plogging for 10 minutes burns 48 calories, while usual jogging for 10 minutes burns about 39 calories.

Plogging is a movement that anyone can join. To get started, choose plogging route that you know is heavily littered but still considered safe. Do not forget to bring your recyclable rubbish bags and gloves, as well as some hand sanitizer (消毒纸巾) if necessary. You can jog alone or in groups. You can do it early in the morning, or a bit before going to work, or even in the late afternoon. If you’re not much of a jogger, that’s okay! You can take a walk. Anything that suits you! It really does not matter whether you take a 2-mile jog or a 5-mile marathon, or just a 15-minute morning walk, the idea with plogging is that you do some physical exercise while helping to pick up litter!

Every day, about 2 million people plog in over 100 countries. If you have a pair of gloves, a rubbish bag, and enjoy being outside, plogging may be right for you!

It was a cold night in Washington, D.C., and I was heading back to the hotel when a man came to me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I’d read the signs: “Don’t give money to panhandlers (乞丐).” So I shook my head and kept walking.

I wasn’t prepared for a reply, but he said, “I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But I kept on walking.

I couldn’t forget what happened to me that day for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a very cold night, no less, I thought the worst of a fellow human being. Flying back to Anchorage, I still couldn’t help thinking of him.

I was the writer of a weekly garden column (专栏)at The Anchorage Daily News. One day, out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean’s Cafe, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry people every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens for Bean’s? Plant a row and take it down to Bean’s. Clean and simple.

We didn’t keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. People would call me when they took something in. Those who only grew flowers gave them away. Food for the spirit.

In 1995 , the Garden Writers Association of America ( GWAA) held their meeting in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage’s program, Plant a Row for Bean’s became Plant a Row for the Hungry. The idea was to have every member of the Garden Writers Association of America write or talk about planting a row for the hungry.

As more and more people started working with the program, many companies gave free seed to customers and had the logo (商标)seen in public.

Garden editor Joan Jackson raised more than 30,000 pounds of   fruits and vegetables her first year, and showed the public how the program could really work. Texas fruit farms gave away food to their local food bank after hearing about Plant a Row. Today the program continues to grow.

I am shocked that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in

America - and we’re seventy million strong - plants one row for the hungry, we can make a difference in the number of neighbors who don’t have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty ( ) about walking past a hungry man I could have helped.
