Like most students on international exchange programs, Shavia Westmoreland experienced culture shock (文化冲击) in Beijing, China.

Instead of hiding herself from the outside, Westmoreland overcame (克服) her culture shock by doing an activity she enjoys-volunteering.

“A friend brought me to an orphanage (孤儿院) to help me overcome culture shock,” she said. “He knew that I loved volunteering and language teaching, so he told me the orphanage would be a great place to ‘develop a feeling of home’ in a different culture and improve my language skills.”

Westmoreland enjoyed the visit so much that she started volunteering at the orphanage. She visited once a week to teach English. She also did several “non-purpose” visits on the weekends, just to spend time with the children.

Working with the children, staff and other volunteers taught her more about Chinese culture and gave her chances to practice Chinese.

“I experienced a better understanding of Chinese culture by working with the staff and volunteers. At the end of all conversations, I found that there were more similarities between us than there were differences,” she said.

Volunteering also gave Westmoreland a sense of achievements and the courage (勇气) to hang out around Beijing on her own.

“The experience developed my courage to hang out and learn more about Beijing on my own, giving me more chances to practice Chinese outside my class lessons,” Westmoreland said. “The feeling of independence is an achievement for an exchange student, and I believe my volunteering was helpful to my study in China and was also a huge help to my personal growth.”

Preparing for the college entrance exam is heavy work for high school students. For Wang Xiaofeng, who has a muscular (肌肉的) illness, the challenge was especially big.

The 17-year-old boy comes from Luoyang, Henan Province. When he was at high school, he had a serious illness. As a result, he often fell while walking. And this became more serious as he grew older.

Every night, Wang had to use a ventilator (呼吸机) while he was sleeping. To correct his bent back, he wore a rigid frame (钢架) on his upper body during the day.

In spite of all these difficulties, he refused to give in and never stopped learning. “I am fighting against the illness, and I cannot give myself up.” he said.

According to Wang’s mother, Wang got up at 5:45 am and went to bed at 11:30 pm every day during his three years at high school. Sitting down means a big challenge for Wang. Because of his illness, he always felt very tired after sitting for two classes, let alone seven or eight classes a day. But he seldom complained, and just fixed on studying.

The school gave Wang the greatest support. To make it easier for him to take lessons, his class was arranged in the school on the first floor. And that lasted for 3 years. The school also gave his mother a job as a cleaner and offered them free rooms to live in.

Luckily, Wang’s hard efforts paid off. He was admitted into Nankai University in 2021. He decided to do something to repay the kindness he received. So during the summer vacation, he offered free teaching on high school courses to the students from his village. He hoped to help them realise their personal ambitions.

What do you think of celebrating Christmas Day in China? Christmas Day is very popular in China, especially for young people. Should Chinese people celebrate Christmas Day? 60% people think that we should not take Christmas so seriously, 10% think everyone should celebrate Christmas.

Some people think celebrating Christmas Day can help them understand western culture better. Some people think it is a great holiday to have a good time with their families and friends. During Christmas Day, they can meet friends, go shopping, watch movies and go to different parties.

But I have different ideas. Most of us celebrate Christmas just because we see many people around us do it.

China has its own holidays, such as the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Day, so we don’t have to celebrate holidays from other countries. Some people spend a lot of money celebrating Christmas Day. I was on a train in Switzerland. The train came to a stop and the conductor’s (乘务员的) voice over the loudspeaker delivered a message in German, Italian and French. I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation.

Everyone started getting off the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks(轨道). She asked me where I was trying to get to, then went and talked to some workers, and came back to tell me that we’d have to hop trains three or four times to get there.

I was really glad she was heading the same way because it would have been impossible for me to figure it out on my own. So we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way.

She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total , and when we made it to the final destination, we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to catch as well. I asked her how much farther she had to go and it turned out that her home was two hours back the other way.

She had jumped from train to train and traveled the whole way just to make sure that I made it. I was in shock. A woman spent her whole day sitting on trains and taking her hours away from her home just to help out a confused tourist visiting her country.

No matter how many countries I visit, I’ll always say the most beautiful country in the world is Switzerland.

A.She is a traveller whose hometown is Rome, Italy.
B.Her English is not better than the old woman’s.
C.She was not satisfied with her trip in Switzerland.
