There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who painted the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose 【小题1】 them. One picture was a quiet lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful high mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with white clouds. All who saw this picture 【小题2】 that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had 【小题3】 , too. But these were rocky. Above was an angry sky, rain fell from it and lightning played in it. Down the side of the mountains fell a waterfall. This did not look 【小题4】 at all.

But when the king looked 【小题5】 , he saw behind the waterfall a small bush(灌木) 【小题6】 in a crack(裂缝) in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built 【小题7】 nest(巢). There sat the mother bird in her nest—in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the 【小题8】 picture. Do you know why?

“ 【小题9】 peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, 【小题10】 , or hard work,”explained the king. “Peace means to be the middle of all those noisy things and still be peaceful in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

There was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), a crane (鹤) and a river. Crane thought the river was hers, and Hummingbird thought it was hers too. 【小题1】, they decided to solve the problem by having a race.

“We will race for four days,” said Crane. “【小题2】 the fourth day, the one that gets to the tall tree across the river first will control the river.”

Hummingbird agreed. She knew that she was 【小题3】 faster than Crane.

The race began. Crane tried her 【小题4】 to fly. Hummingbird took her time (从容不迫). She knew that she could pass Crane at any time. She found some flowers and rested there.

Night was coming. Hummingbird rested and slept, 【小题5】 Crane travelled all night. She flew miles 【小题6】 than Hummingbird when Hummingbird woke the next day.

Hummingbird flew fast and passed Crane in the morning. But she rested when she found more 【小题7】. Then Crane passed her. After some time, Hummingbird passed Crane again. The race went on like this until the night of the 【小题8】 day when Hummingbird rested again.

The next morning, 【小题9】 Hummingbird woke, she flew to the tall tree. When she got to the tree, she found Crane was already there.

“All of the water is now 【小题10】,” said Crane. And she went to drink in her river.

From then on, Hummingbird drank only from the flowers she found in the race.

Long long ago there was a lazy cat. He thought his life was boring. And he spent 【小题1】 of the time eating, sleeping and snoring (打呼噜). He ate once a day, and then went back to bed and slept. And he 【小题2】 took exercise. So he couldn’t find 【小题3】 interesting in his life. 【小题4】, his snoring sound was too loud for other animals. They were angry, because they couldn’t 【小题5】 well at night. One day, a big cat 【小题6】 to teach the lazy cat a lesson. And he asked a few animals to help him. They wanted to 【小题7】 the little cat and beat (打) him with a baseball bat. Because the poor cat never exercised, he was too 【小题8】 to move. When other animals ran after him, he 【小题9】 run away quickly. When he was caught, he knew doing exercise is very important. After that, he 【小题10】 to do sports as much as he could. Then he found his life was not boring anymore.
