	Chess club Do you want to improve your thinking skills(技能)? Do you want to make new friends? Join our chess club! Chess makes you think hard. You will learn and have a great time at the same time. Club meetings are going to start next week. Join us after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Room 288.
	Swimming Team Swimming isn’t just fun. It’s also good exercise! You can stay in shape and have a good time. We have lessons for all different levels. We meet after school and on weekends. Join us today or stop by the pool to learn more.
	Acting Group Acting is fun and useful. You can meet lots of new people and improve your social skills. We do lots of role play games in our classes. Everyone can have a great time acting. Join our club and be a star! We meet at the school theatre every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Hope to see you there!

Laura loves contests(竞赛). She likes to win(赢).

“OK, everyone .” Mr. Perkins says, “we need a class leader (班长) for each month. He or she needs to choose a theme (选择一个主题) for the class activity that month.”

“It is a contest! I must win!” thinks Laura.

“The class leader will do a lot of things,” Mr. Perkins says. “Who wants to be the class leader? Put up your hands.”

Laura puts up her hand first. Michael, Ken, Zoe, Melissa and Berry put up their hands, too. Mr. Perkins writes their names on the blackboard.

“I have a great idea for the class activity,” Melissa says to her deskmate.

Laura hears Melissa’s words. Melissa doesn’t just want to win. She wants to help the class.

“Who do you want to be this month’s class leader? Why?” asks Mr. Perkins.

“I think Melissa will be a good class leader,” says Laura. “She has a great idea for the class activity, and she always helps.”

“Thanks,” Melissa says. “But I think you want to be the class leader.”

“Next month, I think.” says Laura.
