Love is a two-way street

A father sat at his desk and looked at his bills when his young son rushed in and said, “Dad, because today is your birthday and you’re 40 years old, one for each year!” When the boy started making good on his word (履行诺言), the father shouted, “don’t do it now. I’m too busy!”

The boy soon fell silent as tears fell from his big blue eyes. Feeling sorry, the father said, “You can finish later.” The boy said nothing but quietly walked away, “Come and finish the kisses now, Andrew!” But the boy didn’t respond (回应).

Unfortunately, a few days later after the father’s birthday, the boy had an accident and died. His father wrote: “If only(要是……,该多好),   Icould tell him how sorry and sad I am for my thoughtless words, and could be assured that he knows how much my heart is hurting.” He regretted not accepting the boy’s kisses and now he had lost the chance forever.

Love is a two-way street. Any loving act must be warmly accepted, or others will take it as a“NO” and it can leave a scar (伤痕). If we are too busy to give and receive love with love to those who are close and precious to us. If we don’t receive love, our life will lose its true meaning. Nothing is more important than accepting love from those who are near and precious to us.

All over the world, children in hospital are getting a new kind of medicine: laughter. Lucy works for Theodora Children's Trust. She is one of many clown (小丑) doctors who bring a smile to the faces of sick children.

I'm a clown doctor. I call myself Dr LooLoo. I spend two days a week in children's hospitals with my friend Dr Chequers. We make funny faces, tell jokes, and do magic tricks (把戏). As I walk into a ward (病房), I shake hands with the kids and sing songs. We take special balloons to make "balloon animals" and tell funny stories about them. We often meet kids who look really sick at first, then we go back the next week and they're running about, shouting "Hi there, Dr LooLoo! Hi Dr Chequers!"

I'm naturally a very cheerful person. I've always been a clown. In fact, my father was a clown and I started working with him when I was eight years old. I knew it was just the job for me. I became a clown doctor because I think it's a great way to cheer up sick children in hospital.

At lunchtime we eat in the hospital dining hall and that's really useful because we meet the nurses and doctors. They tell us about some kids who they think will benefit(获益) from a clown doctor's visit. For example, if a child is afraid, perhaps he's being given an injection (注射) or some medicine, we'll visit him and take his attention, then the nurse can do her job.

At about six o'clock, Dr Chequers and I change our clothes. We're very tired. At weekends we are often asked to take part in events (公开活动) to raise money for Theodora Children's Trust. Being a clown doctor is very tiring, but it makes the worries of everyday life seem small. All in all, I feel lucky to do this job.

【小题1】The job of clown doctors is to bring a smile to __________.
【小题2】It usually takes Lucy __________ to stay in children's hospitals each week.
【小题3】Lucy thinks she was born to be a clown because she is a __________ person.
【小题4】It's useful for Lucy to eat in the hospital dining hall because she can know __________.
【小题5】Though being a clown doctor is very tiring, Lucy can reduce __________.
