On a winter morning, a little boy of 10 years old or so went to a phone supermarket to make a telephone call. Clearly, he changed his tone (腔调) of voice while speaking over the phone. When all this was happening, the phone supermarket owner watched and listened with great interest to the conversation that followed:

“Madam, I am a poor boy. Can you give me a job cutting grass on your lawn (草坪)?” the little boy asked.

“Sorry, I already have someone to cut my lawn,” the woman at the other end of the phone line answered.

“Madam, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.”

“The person who is now cutting my lawn satisfies me a lot. He is doing a good job.”

“Madam, I’ll even sweep your curb (清扫路边), so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida.”

“No, thank you.”

Instead of getting angry, the little boy smiled and put back the receiver (话筒) gently. The supermarket owner, who was listening to the conversation, walked over to the boy and said, “Soon, I like your manner and I would like to offer you a job.”

“No, thanks. But I will remember your offer.”

“But you were asking for a job so sincerely and seriously when you were talking to the lady over the phone.”

“No sir, I was just checking how well or badly I’ve done the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!” the little boy said.

This is such a heart-warming piece of news in the cold winter. Some days ago, the temperature was only—6 in Kaifeng, Henan. Someone ordered 50 cups of warm porridge through Meituan App and noted “Please give the porridge to those sanitation workers who are clearing snow on the road nearby and those delivery (递送) men who are delivering food.” When the porridge shop owner received the order, he was moved by the note and provided 60 cups.

The story didn’t end here. As soon as the food delivery man got the big order, he shared it with his workmates so that they could also get paid. Finally, Meituan returned the money to the porridge buyer, Mr. Zhang and gave him a reward of 500 yuan. Although he had to raise his newly-born baby and pay for his house every month. Mr. Zhang said he would surely continue delivering love.

The kind help also encouraged many other citizens in Kaifeng. This summer, volunteers are sending cool drinks every day.

Similar stories have happened in many other places in China. Outdoor worker in different cities are able to enjoy free and caring help. Lots of “love posts” are providing “coolness” in hot summer and “warmth” in cold winter. Just as a citizen of Kaifeng said “I feel deeply moved and warm in heart.”

During Chinese New Year, it was a great surprise for people to find that a 40-metre-long balloon loong (“loong” sounds the same as the Chinese word for “dragon”) flew through a large place in Hong Kong. A lot of people went there to see the balloon loong and take photos of it.

On January 24, the Guinness World Records officially (官方地) believed it was the largest balloon loong in the world. It is 41.77 metres long and is made up of 38,000 balloons.

Wilson Pang is a balloon artist and he has over ten years of experience. He always wanted to make a balloon loong in the past. In Chinese stories, loongs can bring rain and rain is good for both plants and animals.

Since 2024 is the Year of the Loong, Pang worked with a team of 60 people. The team was made up of balloon artists and students. They started making the balloon loong on January 20 and they worked day and night. “The loong has a special meaning for the Chinese people, so we must work as carefully as we can,” Pang said. To Pang, the hardest part was making the eyes. He made more than ten times before they were right. He spent much time and work on the balloon loong.
