The Haizhu District Experimental Primary School has taken up a new rule to alleviate (减轻) worries over students’ backpack weights and health problems. This rule is to make sure students’ backpacks don’t exceed (超出)10 percent of their body weight according to national requests. From a survey (调查), over half of the students used to carry backpacks exceeded this standard. It could lead to back and muscle (肌肉) hurt.

The school gave different suggestions for different grades. Students in grade one and two are under 2.5 kilograms, grades three and four under 3.5 kilograms, and fifth graders and sixth graders are under 4.5 kilograms.

The school advised students to organize their backpacks based on their daily class schedules. They just need to carry necessary textbooks and school things. They should leave out unnecessary objects, and other reading materials can be borrowed from the school library or classroom book corner.

This rule just reflects the “double reduction” policy in 2021. Its purpose is to alleviate students’ after-school courses and homework burden (负担). Schools across the country have taken different kinds of actions to solve this problem, such as guiding students in organizing their backpacks, providing book space and necessary things like drinking water.

Today, people spend a lot of time on mobile phone. We call the time we spend on TV, computers and mobile phones “screen (屏幕) time”.

The scientists in Australia ask 577,000 children how much time they spend on screens, homework and sports every day. They find about 68% of them spend more than two hours on screens.

Two hours of screen time a day is bad for children’s health. The study (研究) shows harm (伤害) starts after 75 minutes’ screen time for girls and 105 minutes for boys. Why? It is because . “In our study, 24% of boys spend an hour a day exercising, but only 14% of girls do that,” Dr Khan said.

So it is important for children to do sports and balance (平衡) their screen time. Mr. Smith has a “three-time” system (系统) for his son Peter—a “go time” for homework, a “slow time” to play computer games or talk with friends on the Internet, and a “green time” for exercise or outdoor games. “We need to get children outside and do exercise. Qi Haoran, a Junior 1 student, was quite busy over the past winter vacation – and not just with homework. Qi, together with 10 other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign.
The 11 students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. “Excuse me, do you know that 950 million people around the world still haven’t got enough to eat? Please don’t waste food.” They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.
The Clean Your Plate Campaignhas got more and more popular during the past year all over China. It calls on people to reduce food waste.
China in these years had serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous(大方的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food.
