Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system (远程遥控系统) — allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business. About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

ChatGPT, an intelligent AI chatbot(聊天机器人) tool, has been very popular all over the world in the past few months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework.
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned(禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat(作弊) on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT.
Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all schools say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor(副校长) for education at the University Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on Al software like ChatGPT are wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told the school newspaper the university. What we need to do is “change our learning, teaching and examination. That way, we can “have integrity(诚信) while recognizing(认可) the use of the tool”.
