It was October 2004. Red foxes killed 180 penguins (企鹅) on Middle Island, Australia. Foxes are not native to Australia. But humans had brought foxes there to use for sport hunting (狩猎). Then, the foxes started killing penguins and other native wildlife for food.
The type of penguin that lives on Middle Island is called the little penguin. It is the smallest kind of penguin in the world. Once, about 800 little penguins lived on the island. By 2005, that number was below 10. What could people do?
A local chicken farmer named Allan Marsh had an idea. Marsh wanted to train sheepdogs to protect penguins. He said the sheepdogs would scare the foxes away. Marsh used sheepdogs to guard his chickens from foxes. He thought it would work for penguins, too.
Finally, in 2006, the first sheepdog began to work. Since then, the number of penguins on Middle Island has grown to 220.
Australian zoos are now trying to use sheepdogs to save the eastern barred bandicoot (东袋狸). People haven’t seen this small animal outside a zoo since 2002. The zoos plan to return bandicoots to the wild, with sheepdogs for protection.

Climate change is threatening(威胁)our future as more greenhouse gases like CO2 are collecting in the air. To solve the problem, scientists have suggested whales as a solution. They have found whales are excellent at controlling CO2.
Whales remove(清除)carbon from the air in two ways. First, they bring nutrients (养分)from the deep ocean back to the surface. Those nutrients help the growth of plants. Second, whales themselves collect CO2 in their bodies when they eat other animals. A whale can collect about 33 tons of gas over its lifetime. When whales die, they take all that carbon with them down to the ocean floor.
There used to be millions of whales in the world’s oceans. But it’s a pity that whaling between the 1600s and the mid-1900s brought many whales to death. Starting in the 1970s, careful management of whaling began. Many whales have been saved, but the huge animals are still influenced by pollution from chemicals(化学品), noise, and lots of plastics that end up in the oceans.
If whale population is as big as before, whales could take in about 1.7 billion tons of CO2 each year. Think about the high costs needed to plant forests for taking in CO2, you will see whales might be an amazing solution. So let’s fight for it.

George is a young man. He has a very big dog and he has a very small car, too. He likes playing basketball best. Last Monday he played basketball for about an hour at his basketball club, and then he ran out and jumped into a car, but his dog jumped into another one.
“Come here, silly dog!” George shouted at(大喊) him, but the dog stayed in the car.
George put his hand into the ignition (点火开关), but it did not turn. Then he looked at the car again. It was not his! He was in the wrong car! But the dog was in the right one! “He’s sitting and laughing at me!” George said angrily. But then he smiled and got into his own car.

What will you do in the summer? Here is my plan. I will volunteer at ARG (Animal Rights Group). ARG takes care of pets without a home.
Sometimes, people move away and they can’t take their pets with them. Other times, people are too old or sick and they can’t take care of their pets. Or sometimes, people are not nice to their pets.
See this puppy? His name is Rocket. His family left (遗弃) him alone in a field. Luckily, ARG found Rocket and took him to the animal centre.
ARG needs a lot of volunteers. I’m going to volunteer four times a week. I will walk the dogs and I’ll help with the other animals, too. I love animals.
