Some ants (蚂蚁) make their homes under a stone. If the weather is warm, you may see many ants under the stone. If the weather is cold, many ants will be in their house under the ground.
Most of the ants are workers. They are very busy. They look for food and take care of the young ants. Each family of ants has a queen ant (蚁后). The queen ant doesn’t work. She is important because she lays eggs (产卵). These eggs will become new ants.
There are many kinds of ants in America. One kind of these is very strong. People are afraid of it and animals are afraid of it, too.
These ants move in groups. They eat all the animals on their way. They can kill and eat elephants. When the ants come near, people leave their homes. But people are sometimes glad after the ants pass through, because they will see no other insects (昆虫) or snakes.

I like animals, especially birds. When I have free time, I like watching birds and reading the books about animals. Let me tell you something about owls(猫头鹰)and pigeons(鸽子).
Owls are night animals. They have big eyes. They seem to be able to see better at night. Owls are strange animals. They sleep in the daytime. At night, they come out to look for food. So the animals like owls are called nocturnal ones.
Pigeons are big birds. They like to live in a birdhouse. Many people like to keep pigeons. They make a room for them near a window. In the day the pigeons fly away. But at night they come back. Sometimes people take a pigeon far away from home, and they tie a letter to one of its legs. Then the pigeon takes the letter back home.

There are about 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs (瓢虫) in the world. They come in many different colors. Their bright colors warn other animals or insects not to eat them. Ladybugs taste bad. A bird or a frog that eats a ladybug will remember the bright colors and it will not eat another ladybug with the same colors again. When ladybugs are in danger, they will give out a fluid (液体) that tastes terrible.
In many cultures, the ladybug is considered to be a symbol of good luck. Most ladybugs are kind to humans. They eat other insects which destroy crops. One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 insects in its lifetime.
Ladybugs have six short legs. They live in many different places, including green lands, forests, cities, the countryside and along rivers. Different ladybugs have different spots (点). Some of them don’t have spots at all. The most common kind in North America is the 7-spotted ladybug. The 7-spotted ladybugs are the most active from spring to autumn. Dragonflies fly around in the morning or evening of summer, but how much do you know about us?
Why are dragonflies in a hurry?
Most dragonflies live for only a few months as grow-ups, so we fly around looking for food. The largest dragonfly can fly 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, making us the fastest flying insects(昆虫).
Important facts
1, We have the biggest eyes of any insect. They take up most of our head and make us see ahead, below and behind, all at the same time. Each compound eye(复眼) has up to 5,000 very small eyes.
2, There are more than 5,000 different kinds of dragonflies.
3, You can find us in almost every country of the world.
4, We catch other insects and eat them as we fly.
5, We are not dangerous to people.
Life cycle(周期)
We drop our eggs in the water. Our young babies live underwater for many years.
Skilled fliers
Our wings are very special. Each wing can move on its own or together as a pair.
Like helicopters(直升机), we can hover. That keeps us the same place in the air. We can hover in the air for up to one minute.
