Are you ready to start managing your money? Then you need to make a plan, called a budget. In your budget, you will record the money that you get, earn, spend and save.

Here’s how a budget works. Cassie gets an allowance (零花钱) and does chores around the house. Sometimes, she also earns money helping people in the neighborhood. Cassie hasn’t been able to save any money, and she wants to buy a guitar. She does not know where all her money goes. So she asks her parents for help setting up a budget. Here are the steps she followed.

She wrote down the money she earned in the first week.

Money Earned

Allowance ……………….$ 5.00                                                                             Dust furniture ..........................$ 4.00

Be mother’s helper for Mrs. King …$ 5.00                                                Total .....................................$ 14.00

Whenever Cassie spent money, she wrote down how much she spent.

Money Spent

Movies ……………………$ 5.00                                                                    Pizza/Soda............................... $ 2.90

Snack ……………………$ 0.75                                                                        Snack .......................................$ 1.25

Magazine ………………$ 3.20                                                                           Total ...........................................$ 13.10

At the end of the first week, she looked it over. Then she found that she had spent too much money. So she looked for ways to spend less and save more. She decided to bring snacks from home. She also decided that she would see if another family in the neighborhood needed a mother’s helper.

Over the next few months, Cassie’s budgeting helped her reach her goal. She saved enough to buy a guitar.
