Christmas is a Christian (基督教) holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. No one knows the exact date of Christ’s birth, but most Christians celebrate it on December 25th. On this day, many people go to church, they can take part in special religious (宗教的) services. In Britain, Christmas dinner is eaten at noon. During the Christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate (装饰) their homes.

One German couple tried their best to prepare for their Christmas decorations in a different way. Thomas and Susanne decorated the outside of their house with a few simple Christmas decorations. From the outside, their house looks normal. However, the inside of the house is so different from the outside.

They started decorating in October. It took them 8 weeks to set everything up. They put 100 Christmas trees into their small house! They decorate the trees with small coloured electric lights and 16, 000 baubles (小玩意).

They did not always have so many trees. In the beginning, they had a small Christmas collection. As time went on, they grew their collection rapidly. They started decorating in early October. It’s so special that even the bathroom has a Santa Claus toilet seat.

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people. This year it falls on October 4th.

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called “zhuyu” to celebrate it . Both chrysanthemum and “zhuyu” are considered as clean plants that can clean houses and treat diseases.

It is a traditional virtue (美德) in China to respect elderly people .Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. On a crowded subway or bus, younger people always offer their seats to elderly people. Chinese people believe that to respect the elderly people is to respect themselves tomorrow.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is one of the most important festivals in China. It is celebrated on May 5th on lunar calendar and has a history of over 2,000 years. In 278 BC, the great poet Qu Yuan jumped into the river and died for his beloved homeland. Later people started to celebrate the festival to memorialize him. Nowadays, there are some celebrating activities around China on that day.

Chinese people like to eat Zongzi on Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is made of glutinous rice with meat, nuts or bean paste. People usually wrap it in bamboo leaves. Now eating Zongzi is a custom in many Asian nations, such as North and South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and so on.

Dragon boat racing is another important part of the festival all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped boats pulling the oars (浆) hurriedly, with rapid drums, speeding towards the end.

On Dragon Boat Festival, parents usually dress their children up with Hsiang Pao (香包). It will be hung around their necks or tied to the front of the clothes. Children are not the only ones who wear Hsiang Pao. Elder people often give each other Hsiang Pao as a symbol of respect.
