How do plants grow in space? An experiment (实验) on the Tiangong space station can provide the answer. Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice in space. This makes it possible for astronauts to grow food to support long-term space stays.
“The rice plants are growing very well,” Zheng Huiqiong, a scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, the plants of the tall shoot rice have reached a height of about 30 cm. They’re much taller than the box, which is about 14 cm. Plus, the plants of the dwarf rice (短杆水稻) have grown to around 5 cm.
Although there have been other rice experiments in space, the one on Tiangong is different. For the first time in history, the experiment aims to produce the whole life cycle (周期) of the rice. It begins with a seed (种子) and ends with new seeds produced.
The astronauts will keep watching the plants. If the experiment is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies, Zheng added.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking the seeds of crops to space. But growing rice in space is a different challenge because of the bad conditions of space. Micro-gravity, no enough air and high-energy space rays may make the plants difficult to grow.
Rice has been a main food for astronauts for a long time. US astronauts on the Apollo 11-the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969-ate cold dried chicken and rice during their trip to space.
If such an experiment goes well, astronauts will be able to plant their food in space. They don’t need to take a large number of food with them for their space travels.

All of us learn poems by Li Bai and Du Fu from a young age.
At the World Robot Conference (WRC) 2023, the “poets” appeared in the form of humanoid (人形的) robots.
The WRC 2023 took place in Beijing between August 16 and 22. More than 160 companies from around the world took part in the event.
The humanoid robots were the most popular with visitors. They not only look like humans, but, more importantly, can understand human language and follow instructions. Pet-shaped robots also attracted a large number of visitors. The Cyber Dog 2, for example, enjoys “being tickled (挠痒)” by its owner under its chin(下巴). What’s more, it can do flips (空翻) and other tricks like a real dog.
Robots are here to stay.
A.They showed nearly 600 types of robots. |
B.We know they can do a lot of things now. |
C.They were both dressed in historical costumes. |

We sometimes see robots around us. From homes and schools to hospitals and factories, robots are part of our life. Today, people around the world are using about 3,500,000 robots. They make our life easier and better. But they can also make problems. One big problem is that we are losing our jobs to them. Will robots replace all of us one day?
Some people think that robots will make it. Robots are strong enough, so they can do dangerous jobs for humans. For example, robots can work in the sea or in the mountains. They don’t need to eat or sleep. They can also work in factories. They can do heavy work and never get tired.
Robot will never forget. We can use them to calculate (计算), and they calculable more quickly than humans. They hardly make mistakes.
But most people don’t think robots will take the place of humans. Robots can only follow the orders. They don’t know how to solve unexpected (意外的) problems. For example, a robot teacher can give us lessons, but it usually tells what the book says. It could not answer our questions very well.
More importantly, humans have strong feelings and know how to love, but robots don’t. Besides, when robots do dangerous and boring jobs for us, it gives us more time to do more creative jobs.
No matter what you think, we should take good use of the robots and make our life better.
