Driving a car, buying clothes, using heating in winter—lots of things you do send out CO2 into the air. But do you know that the food you eat every day plays a big role in your carbon footprint, too?
According to the survey of The Conversation, an Australian website, about one-third of the world’s carbon emissions(碳排放) come from agriculture. To create fewer carbon emissions from food systems, the whole agriculture process should be thought about, including growing, processing, transportation and waste. The Conversation provides some useful ideas that can help cut down carbon emissions in food system. Here are two examples.
Smart fertilizers(农药) When people make traditional fertilizers, they need to burn lots of coal(煤). That causes lots of carbon emissions. At the same time, fertilizers are often overused, creating greater land pollution. Now, some companies are making smart bio-fertilizers. They let microorganisms(微生物) live together with crops. This not only reduces carbon emissions but also helps the ecosystem become healthier.
Vertical farming(垂直农业) Vertical farms make good use of room in the air above. It will help farmers save the land and grow more crops. Some new vertical farms also use energy-saving LED lights to produce year-round crops. Compared with traditional farms, these new types of farms use less water and labor. They can save both resources(资源) and manpower.
