My boyfriend Shane and I were hanging out in the subway one evening. I was talking but he was looking over at someone. Then he said he needed to check something. He walked over to a young girl who was crying on a bench (长椅). The girl had been homeless for some time. She told my boyfriend that all she wanted was to go to her sister’s house. He asked where her sister lived. It wasn’t even in the city.

Some people saw her, just handed her some money or wished her good luck. Shane did much more. He said to me, “Kelly, I can’t leave her here like this. Sometimes people need someone not only to help them but to believe they’re telling the truth.”

We took her to two women’s shelters (收容所), but the staff at each shelter said they couldn’t take any more people. It was a bit cold, so we decided to take her home. She broke down in tears and thanked me about a million times. She didn’t know that it was Shane’s idea, not mine. The next morning, she was finally able to get a hold of her sister, so she had a place to go. Shane drove her to the bus station and bought her a ticket.

This man trusted that she really wanted to go home and just needed help. At that moment, he changed how I view the world. Sometimes what people need is not just money, but people who will trust, listen to and understand them.

Living and communicating with kids can be a difficult job these days. However, many young people think that living and communicating with parents can be even more difficult. When I became a junior high school student, I learnt that it is important to tell your feelings. With any relationship, you need to let other people know your feelings. If you are not able to communicate, things will become bad.

If you are angry with your parents and refuse to talk to them, it won’t help. If you look up the word “communication” in a ①____, it will say “the exchange(交换) of ideas and information.” To keep a good relationship, you must improve communication skills. Here is an example. One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she felt it would be rude(无礼的) of her to leave first. We can only solve problems with communication. So just keep it in mind: if you get into a situation like Sophie, tell your parents how you feel.

How do you get to school? By bike, by bus or by subway? For many of today’s students, it’s a small thing. But for 14-year-old Radhika and 16-year-old Yashoda in India, it’s still difficult.

Radhika and Yashoda live in a small village with their parents. The village is far from their school. It often takes them up to six hours a day to go to school and back. They have to climb the mountains and cross a river. There is no bridge over the river. So they have to go across the river by metal trolley (金属缆车). After that, they wait for a car and take it to school on the last part of the trip.

On the way to school, Radhika and Yashoda take lunch boxes and school books with them. They sometimes stop to drink clean water down from the mountains. They can sometimes be in danger. Some animals like lions are behind tall trees. But they don’t think much of that. “We’re not scared,” Yashoda says.

Radhika and Yashoda have their great dreams. For Radhika, she wants to be a teacher. She knows she must fight for it and realize it.
