Tuesday, September 20

I arrived in New York two weeks ago. I am writing my diary in English because my English teacher Rachel says it is a good way to practice English. So far, I like New York and my school. I have three classes a day. Most of my classmates come from Japan, South Korea, Spain, Germany and Australia. There aren’t many Chinese students, so I have to use English most of the time. I am learning a lot! I am living in student housing, and I have my own comfortable room.

Thursday, October 21

My English is hopeless! I was on the bus this morning and a man spoke to me, but I hardly understood him. I was very sad. Why is my English improving so slowly? I want to make lots of American friends, but this isn’t happening so easily. I’m a shy girl. It is hard for me to talk to some people, even my classmates! I like them, but sometimes I can’t understand them very well. I miss my friends and family. I want to go home in December.

Thursday, November 16

I went to a school party last Friday and it was great. I talked with a Japanese boy named Kenji, a German girl named Wendy and an Italian girl named Carla. We talked about our countries’ customs (风俗) and our experiences in America. We are going to walk around New York together this weekend. Also, Kenji wants me to write for the student newspaper here at school. Maybe things are getting better!

Last week, I finally managed to get a new football shirt for the school match. I wore it excitedly to the training before the match, but I wished I hadn’t done that! It was torn (破损的) after the training!

As I walked home worriedly, I saw a shop sign: All Kinds of Repairs and Services! I went inside at once. I looked around the shop and saw broken toys, broken chairs ... I wondered if I was in the wrong place. Just then, a man with white hair said cheerfully, “Welcome to my repair shop! I can repair everything!”

“But ... what I need is a tailor (裁缝) to deal with my football shirt.”

“You’ve come to the right place. I’ve been waiting a long, long time to repair a football shirt.

“Really?”

To my surprise, he took the shirt from me, put on glasses and sat down. “I guess you are a striker (前锋),” he smiled warmly. How could he know? The man gave me a wink and said calmly, “See that picture on the wall? That was me 30 years ago.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes! He was Orhan, the famous footballer who was on the city team years ago! I told him I was playing for the school team and I had been his fan for years. I told him everything, my dream, my practice and even my dad’s words. “Dad thinks I should be an engineer or a doctor.” I lowered my head.

“Follow your dream, choose a job you love and carry on.” The man smiled at me with his blue eyes. He patted (轻拍) me on the shoulder and put the shirt he had repaired in my bag.

Today I have become a footballer and I still keep that shirt.

That day was Random Acts of Kindness Day.

A random act of kindness is usually unexpected and unplanned. Maybe help someone carry groceries (杂货). Maybe pay for a stranger’s coffee. Or maybe send a helpful note to a friend.

I remembered, at a shopping mall, I saw a man sitting on the ground with a sigh, said “Please help.”

I often give $20 to people like him, but now I decided to invest (投入) some time as well. I stopped and said, “Come on, brother. Pick up your things and let’s get you some groceries.”

As we walked back into the mall, I learned that he had a place to live, but no money to buy food.

Anyhow, he shared his story and I still wanted to help him. We started with some fruit and vegetables. He chose some tomatoes first, then got some carrots and onions. I asked him what else he wanted, he said meat.

He told me he had two boys, a big pack of noodles went in the basket. He also asked if he could get some toothbrush, of course, fine.

I was not sure exactly what had happened to this man, but his smile was genuine (真诚的). He only took what he really needed. I know I won’t do this all the time, as I can’t afford to do so. But treating people with dignity (尊严), kindness and compassion is important. Helping others is a good way to help the world, even in just a small way. We often feel as thought here’s nothing we can do to make the world better. But that’s just not true.
