In 1997, a spaceship called Cassini was sent to explore Saturn (土星) and its moons. Now Cassini’s mission (使命) has come to an end. Scientists made it fall and burn up in 2017. But before that happened, the spaceship had made many trips between Saturn and its rings, sending photos and other information back to the Earth.
Cassini was a project carried out by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. It took Cassini about seven years to reach Saturn.
Scientists have learned many exciting things from Cassini. In 2005, Cassini sent a space probe (探测器) to Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, so scientists could get a closer look at the moon’s surface. One of the most important discoveries Cassini made was that there is warm liquid water (液态水) under the ice that covers one of Saturn’s smaller moons, Enceladus. Scientists believe conditions on Enceladus could be similar to the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth.
Cassini’s mission was supposed to be ended in 2008, but because it was still in good shape, scientists increased its life to 2017. Cassini performed the last task of its mission on September 15, 2017.
When Cassini ran out of its fuel (燃料) and entered Saturn’s atmosphere (大气层), it burned up. Scientists said it was necessary for Cassini to be totally destroyed (毁坏) so there was no chance that microbes (微生物) from the Earth could be harmful to any possible life on Saturn.
【小题1】What made scientists think that there might be life on Enceladus?
A.Animals’ waste was found.
B.They heard strange sounds.
C.Some ice was seen to cover it.
D.There is warm liquid water on it.
【小题2】What might happen if Cassini wasn’t totally destroyed?
A.It might destroy Saturn’s surface.
B.It will fall onto the Earth.
C.The microbes from the Earth might be bad for Saturn’s possible life.
D.It will continue to send back information.
【小题3】Which of the following things about Cassini is NOT mentioned?
A.Its findings.B.Its lasting time.
C.Its burning.D.Its later use.
【小题4】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Cassini was a very successful and useful spaceship.
B.Cassini has stayed in Saturn for ten years.
C.The project of exploring Saturn was carried out by America alone.
D.Enceladus is the biggest moon of Saturn.
【小题5】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The process (过程) of sending Cassini to Saturn.
B.The moons and rings of Saturn.
C.The end of Cassini’s mission.
D.The life on Saturn.

In the universe (宇宙), as we know, there is the sun, the moon, the earth and many stars. Through our geography lessons, we know the earth goes round the sun, and the moon goes round the earth. We have day and night because the earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is day. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, it is night.

Just because the moon is closer to the earth than the sun, it looks much bigger than the sun. Big things will look smaller when they are farther, and small things also look bigger when they are nearer,

The sun is bright enough to give out very strong light. The moon can’t give out any light at all, but it looks quite bright too. Why? In fact, the light from the moon comes from the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But actually (事实上) the stars are much bigger and brighter than the moon. They look smaller than the moon also because they are farther away from the earth.

There are still many other planets (行星) in the universe. All of them move round the sun. But of all these planets, only on the earth there are living things and people can only live on the earth too. At 9:00 a.m., on October 15th 2003, Chinese pilot (飞行员) Yang Liwei was sent up to space. He stayed there for 21 hours. It was the first time for Chinese to get into space.

【小题1】We find the sun ______ than the moon because it is ______ to us.
A.bigger; fartherB.smaller; closer
C.bigger; closerD.smaller; farther
【小题2】When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, the other part of the earth is ______.
A.nightB.dayC.eveningD.Sunday
【小题3】When did the pilot from our country return to the earth?
A.On November 15th, 2002.B.On October 16th, 2003.
C.On May 5th, 2004.D.On October 15th, 2003.
【小题4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The moon goes round the earth, and it can’t give out any light at all.
B.The moon goes round the sun, and its light is from the sun.
C.The sun goes round the earth.
D.Only the earth goes round the sun.

We have always been interested in the moon. 2, 000 years ago, people already knew it moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.

When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on the earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity (重力) millions of years earlier.

In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.

After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 billion years ago, something about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.

In the future, though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

【小题1】Before 1969, most scientists thought the moon was ________.
A.part of the earth billions of years earlierB.older than the earth
C.caught by the earth’s gravityD.made of the same things as the earth
【小题2】What do most scientists think now about the moon and the earth?
A.The earth was once part of the moon.B.The moon used to be part of the earth.
C.Mars will hit earth in the near future.D.Rocks will join together to become another moon.
【小题3】We can learn that ________ from this passage.
A.new information brings new ideasB.scientists in the past were not clever
C.we now know everything about the moonD.scientists are so clever that they know everything
