A Love for Dilemma (《小舍得》),” a family TV play about three families’ different attitudes (态度) toward children’s education, leads to a popular discussion online these days. Nowadays, many parents still send their children to take various after-school training classes to learn different skills in order to make kids ready for every competition. Why are Chinese parents worried about their child’s education? What is education for? What is good education? Readers share their opinions.

I think sometimes Chinese parents transfer (传递) their own wishes to their children. Then, there is no end for their children to keep on learning. But parents need to understand that each child’s talents are different from one another. Perhaps all parents need to know what their kids really good at and let them be what they want to be. —Justin

I’m a student and I know my parents care about me a lot. It is the traditional thinking that they want to decide what’s best for their children. In their opinion, they know more than their kids and kids should always listen to them. In fact, those kids lose the ability (能力) to make mistakes and learn from mistakes. Once they meet trouble in their future, it might be very hard for them to solve it by themselves. —Lisa

Nowadays, lots of pupils go to extra classes after school. They often come home at 8 pm or later. And then they have to finish the homework from school. They look so tired every day. I think education should help develop their interests instead of taking away their happiness. The burden on their shoulders is now too much for their age. Parents should not push their children too hard and we should know that good grades aren’t everything. _____▲_____—Emma

Dear Matt,

There is too much homework to do in middle school. Sometimes I can’t finish all the homework as scheduled because some of the homework is too difficult for me to work out. It makes me so upset that I am losing interest in studying. What can I do?

Jay

Dear Jay,

Middle school can be difficult; there’s no doubt about it.

First, I’d recommend doing the hardest homework first. Leave the easy part for later. Another way to organize the order of your homework is from your least favourite to your favourite subject. That way, you can use your energy for the most difficult work in the beginning, and as you become more tired or impatient, you’ll be able to finish the rest more quickly and more easily. Saving the best for last is a good tool of motivation (动力) and serves as a nice reward in the end.

Second, do your homework as soon as you can. This is a great way to organize your most disliked tasks in life. If you get your homework done as soon as you get home (or even during a free period in school), you’ll open up the rest of the day for the things you actually want to do. The longer you avoid your homework, the less likely you are to get it done.

Third, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not in this alone. Can you ask your parents, teachers or friends for help? Would a teacher extend the due date if you ask for more time? Can you join—or organize—a study group? Whatever you decide, you’ll always find others willing to support you and help you be the best student you can be.

Good luck.

Matt

①Now, students and teachers have more chances to use technology in schools. But how much technology should be used in the classroom?

②The biggest advantage of technology in the classroom today is that information is readily got. Students can simply type a question and receive a list of websites with useful information. If a teacher wanted to show a short video in a class 20 years ago, the teacher had to keep the part on the video tape first. Videos are much easier to show today, and a teacher can simply find the video on Douyin. In this way, both teachers and students can get large amounts of information quickly.

③Another advantage is the amount of resources(资源) that can help students learn in the classroom. Now, there are apps, videos, games, and online resources that make lessons more interesting and effective. Technology can also help students study the same lesson by different methods.

④With all the advantages that technology brings into the classroom, there are some disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage may be lower quality(质量) of research and student work. Because of so many online resources, it is easier to turn to the Internet for research. Often, it’s difficult for a student to choose the right information. Also, with so much research done through the Internet, a student may not even know how to find useful information in the library. Another one is that technology can stop the learner from real learning. A teacher might try to use technology to make a lesson more interesting, but the technology itself can catch students’ attention rather than the lesson. It can also keep students from acting actively in the classroom.

⑤How much technology should be used in the classroom is under discussion. It is sure that technology is here to stay. The best way may be a balance(平衡) of both technology and traditional learning methods.

Should we use artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) in schools? Some people may say no, but many experts think we should use it in a good way. They say AI can help us learn better.

Zheng Qinghua, president of Tongji University, said it’s important for us to use AI in education. He believed that Al could help us learn new things and get better at what we study. He also suggested that young people should improve their understanding of the knowledge created by technology.

In fact, AI has already become more and more important for teaching and learning. Zheng stressed the widespread use of different models (模型), such as Ernie Bot, an AI chatbot (聊天机器人) developed by Baidu. It can write papers, solve science problems and do homework.

Students also use AI for their study. A survey made by online learning platform Study showed that 89 percent of students had used Chat GPT to help them do homework.

However, some people worry that it may bring the problem of academic integrity (学术诚信) and bad influence on education. Instead of simply using AI to give answers or finish homework and tests, people should focus on using AI to help students be creative and have the ability of solving real-world problems, said Zheng.

Colin Bailey, president of Queen Mary University of London, said that as ChatGPT develops fast, stopping AI from being used in schools is not the answer. Instead, we should think about how to use it safely and in the right way.

To achieve it, people around the world are working on rules to make sure AI is used in a good way. In the US, people are making a plan to protect people’s rights with chatbots. China also has some interim measures (临时的措施) for managing Al services.
