An earthquake (地震) hit our hometown 12 years ago. The earthquake was serious that now I can still remember it clearly.

It was a sunny afternoon. My son hurt himself when playing soccer, and I took him to the hospital. At that time, we were waiting our turn. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise. Then everything started to shake. People were running and shouting for help. I quickly grabbed (抓紧) my son and then stayed under the front desk.

The shake lasted for about two minutes. After the earth stopped shaking, the noise died down. Everyone was completely shocked and could hardly speak. However, we soon realized that we should get out of the building as quickly as possible, because we were on the second floor.

We brought everyone together and walked to the first floor in silence. I noticed large cracks (裂缝) in the walls of the building while we were moving down. So scary! Luckily, we made it outside. What a special day! I’ll never forget it.

Scientists have long predicted that warmer temperatures caused by climate (气候) change will have the biggest influence on the world’s poorest people. New research now suggests that has already happened over the past years.

A study coming out in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science found that in most poor countries, higher temperatures are more than 90% likely to have resulted in a fall in economic output (经济产量), compared to a world without global (全球的) warming. The influence has been less big in richer countries — with some even benefiting (获益) from higher temperatures.

“We’re not saying that global warming created inequality (不公平)” says Noah S. Diffenbaugh, the writer of the study and a professor at Stanford University who studies climate change. But “global warming has slowed down the improvement”. The poorest countries are facing the worst influence of rising temperatures — for which they are least responsible, he adds.

The new study builds on past research. A 2015 study in the journal Nature predicted that the average income (平均收入) in the poorest countries will be 25% lower by 2100 compared to a world without warming, while some of the richest countries — like the USA-could experience an increase in income. And a report from IPCC, the UN’s climate science body, showed that if global temperatures rise more than 1. 5°C by the end of the century, poor countries will likely face very serious challenges, including the disappearance of whole communities and millions of early deaths. “They will suffer the most, as they are already,” said Mary Robinson, who used to be a UN Special Envoy on Climate Change and a president of Ireland. The influence is greater elsewhere, especially in sub-Saharan, African countries including Sudan, Burkina Faso and Niger, where climate change has driven the average income more than20% lower. “There are a number of ways by which temperature influences economic activities,” says Diffenbaugh. What’s clear is that, for poor countries, the news is all bad.

Earthquakes happen very often in Tokyo, but Tokyo is not an unlucky city. Many special parks have been built in Tokyo to keep people safe during earthquakes. These parks look nothing different from the other parks, but when earthquakes happen, they become life-saving places.

Many useful things in those special parks can meet people’s basic needs.

For example,   it is usually hard for people to get water after earthquakes. In the special parks, people can get drinking water from the water pump (泵). If people need to use toilets (厕所), they can choose special toilets that can be used without water. Also, the helicopter ( 直 升 机 ) can land on squares or baseball fields and bring food or other things to people. What’s more, if people need to cook in the parks, some special benches can become cooking things.

However, those useful things are not enough for people to face earthquakes. The most important part lies in training people. The parks, together with fire stations and the police, will train with local people at the usual time. This will let people think and move faster during real earthquakes and let them protect themselves better.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves from getting hurt in earthquakes? First, we need to check our furniture and make sure they won’t fall down easily. Second, when an earthquake happens, we need to stay under tables or desks and protect our head. Third, we can keep our door open and wear comfortable shoes during small earthquakes in order to get out safely.

【小题1】What can we learn about the special parks from Paragraph 1?
A.The special parks can stop earthquakes.
B.There aren’t enough special parks in Tokyo.
C.The special parks look different from the common ones.
D.People can be safer in the special parks during earthquakes.
【小题2】During earthquakes, people can find ________ in these special parks.
① drinking water   ② traditional toilets   ③ personal planes   ④ cooking things
A.①③B.③④C.①④D.②④
【小题3】Why are useful things “not enough” for people?
A.Because they can’t work well.
B.Because self-help is more important.
C.Because the government doesn’t have enough money.
D.Because it’s hard for people to find them during earthquakes.
【小题4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How to stay safe during earthquakes.B.Why people should check their furniture.
C.How to prepare for danger before it comes.D.What would happen in an earthquake.
【小题5】Where does this reading probably come from?
A.Sports report.B.Nature magazine.C.Science research.D.Travel guidebook.
