Beijing Opera is also called Peking Opera. It started after 1790 when the famous four Anhui opera groups came to Beijing. Its music and singing come from Xi Pi and Er Huang in Anhui and Hubei. Its clothes are all beautiful. It’s full of famous stories, beautiful facial paintings, and wonderful gestures（姿势）and fighting. This kind of opera is very popular with Chinese people.

There are four main roles in Beijing Opera: Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng is the leading man actor. For example, a Wu Sheng is a soldier or fighter. A Xiao Sheng is a young man. A Lao Sheng is an old man. Dan is the young woman role. Jing, mostly man, is the face painted role and Chou is the comedy actor or clown（小丑）.

Stories in Beijing Opera are very interesting. Some of them are from the history book, but most of them are from the literature（文学）. The people in the story usually have some disagreements. They become angry and unhappy. They are sad and lonely（孤独的）. Sometimes they are nervous（紧张的）and worried. But the stories usually end with happiness and laughter.

As a young girl, Liz lived with her sister and their drug-addicted (有毒瘾的) parents. Her parents couldn’t support her study at school. She had to do a lot of housework at home and care for her parents. Soon she was moved away from home and put to the care system as her father couldn’t take care of her. At the age of 15, she ran away with a homeless girl and they lived in the street. She studied hard and at the same time, did some part-time jobs to support herself. She was such a smart girl that she finished high school in two years instead of the usual four. She became a star student and got a scholarship (奖学金) to Harvard University finally.
