Do you know people had three names: their family name, given name and courtesy name (字) in ancient (古代的) China? Let me introduce them to you.

Take famous poet Li Bai as an example. His family name is Li, his given name is Bai, and his courtesy name is Taibai.

People use their given names when they are with their family or friends. And your elders like your grandparents and parents call your given name at home. But in the workplace, people use their courtesy names.

Men get their courtesy names when they are 20 years old. Women get their courtesy names after they get married (结婚).

People’s courtesy names have something to do with their given names. For example, Zhuge Liang’s given name is Liang. It means “bright”. His courtesy name is Kongming. And the meaning is “very bright”.

Scientists have found that lying can be bad for your brain. It may stop you from doing other important things.

◆Hard work

When you tell the truth, your brain doesn’t have to do extra work. But lying takes much more work. Imagine you’re late for class. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. You say, “I picked up a book from the library.” Your teacher asks, “The book I mentioned last time?” Then you must decide how to answer the question. If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. You have to think of a book name. You need to make sure it’s a book that the library has. See? When you lie, your brain works a lot.

◆Expensive lies

You give your brain plenty of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) does the work. “It’s the part in control of short memories,” Jennifer, a scientist, said. That area also takes care of planning, problem-solving and self-control.

Using too much brainpower to lie means it’s not helpful for other things like solving math problems. Lying is even harder for young people. The prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until the age of 25. So when young people lie, they’ll have a harder time doing other things, like making study plans or having healthy habits. So think twice before lying next time.

【小题4】What does the passage mainly talk about “ ________” .

When you go to the park, you might find many older people listening to audiobooks (有声书) instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks have become quite popular these days. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over traditional books? Is listening to an audiobook just as good as reading a book?

Reading needs us to focus on the words in a book, and we also need to find time and a place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like, and it gives your eyes a break, too.

But the big question is, do we get as much information from audiobooks as we do from paper books? Scientists did an experiment (实验) to find the answer. People in group one were asked to listen to an audiobook while people in group two read the same paper book. It turned out that people in group one remembered as much information as people in group two do. They remembered the same amount (量) of information, whether they listened to it or read it.

Another study from a scientific magazine further supported the result above. In the study, scientists studied people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activates (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading does.

However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing other things at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn while doing two things, you’re not going to learn as well,” Daniel Willingham, a professor at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
